A. Declaration of Light Coming

Reader 1:

“The people who walked in darkness

                have seen a great light;

those who lived in a land of deep darkness—

on them light has shined. (Is 9:2)

Reader 2:

Strikes a match, holds it up for everyone to see, walks from the back to the front and lights the four candles.

Readers 1 and 2:

Pick up two candles and carry them to the congregants, letting them light their candle. (Two ushers designated to go and light the rest of the candles.)

Reader 3:

As we light the candles, let us remember those we have lost in the past year, and let us remember, and hold in the light those who struggle with darkness and need the light to shine ever brighter for them.

Reader 3: Call to Prayer: 139:11-12 (Once candles are lit)

Please stand and respond where it says all in your bulletin.

Let’s pray.

“‘If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,

and the light around me become night,”

even the darkness is not dark to you;

the night is as bright as the day,

for darkness is as light to you.”’

All:         O glorious dayspring, come.

The bright eternal light and sun of righteousness,

on those who sit in darkness and death’s cruel shadow, shine.

B. Confession of darkness

Reader 1:

“Let us together recognize that in order to be open to the birth of God into our world we must confess those things that hold us back from receiving this gift.”

Great God,

Forgive us our greed

Forgive us our wars

Forgive us our exclusions

Forgive us our footprint

Free us from these debts we have incurred against you,

as we cancel the debts of those who have are indebted to us.

Reader 2: John 1

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1–14)

Reader 2: (Silent Communion)

As Christ has come into the world,

bringing the light of God’s grace and salvation with him,

let us receive Christ through communion with him in silence.

Let us have communion in the manner of Quakers,

through the holy silence and listening to God’s Spirit who is here and present with us.

(We will take a few minutes for silent reflection and silent communion. To break our communion, we will shake hands with the person next to them and say “May the grace and peace of Christ be with you today.”)

Reader 3:

Look and see, We have brought our flesh and blood,

To be your body for your.

Look and see,

The same Spirit which lived in your flesh

Is living in your people here.

Look at us and let us look at you.

And see you now.

We are expecting you tonight.

All: Come and be born in us. Amen.
