Copy and extend rhythm and movement pattern.

The children will repeat a rhythm and movement pattern.

  1.  The teacher will model a simple sound pattern, such as clap/snap, clap/snap, clap/snap.
  2. Ask the children to join in when they’re familiar with the pattern.
  3. Then repeat with other simple movement patterns: clap/clap/snap, clap/clap/snap or snap/snap/clap.
  4. The teacher will demonstrate how the children can make a variety of sounds using classroom objects such, as hitting sticks together or tapping with pencils.
  5. Introduce to the children It’s Time for a Race.
  6. Accompany the lines of the chant that have musical notations with matching clap patterns.
  1. Can you choose what sound completes the pattern?
  2. Can you solve the pattern?
  3. Can you form another pattern using the clap and snap?

Identify and extend a two-color pattern.

The children will create their own color pattern.

  1.  The teacher will separate sheets of construction paper by color. Set each color of paper in a separate stack on a table.
  2. Ask six volunteers to stand in a line at the front of the class.
  3. Distribute a sheet of construction paper to each child to create a simple repeating pattern, such as blue/yellow, blue/yellow.
  4. Say the pattern aloud and have the children repeat after me.
  5. then ask the children to tell what color comes next. (blue)
  6. Have volunteers select the appropriate color paper from the stacks and join in the line.
  7. In order have each child say its color to tell the pattern.
  8. Keep practicing simple color patterns.
  1. Can you choose the color that completes the pattern?
  2. Can you solve the pattern?
  3. Can you form another pattern using blue and yellow?

Identify and extend two element color patterns

The children will create a two color simple pattern using snap-cubes.

  1.  The teacher will have six volunteers stand in front of the classroom.
  2. Separate the circles of construction paper by color.
  3. Set each color of circles in a separate stack on a table.
  4. Ask for six volunteers to stand on a line at the front of the class.
  5. Distribute a circles of construction paper to each child  to create a simple repeating pattern.
  6. Distribute  six snap-cubes of two colors to each child.
  7. Have the child create a simple two color pattern.
  1.   Can you choose what color of snap-cubes completes the pattern?
  2. Can you predict what color comes next in the pattern?
  3. Can you design another pattern using the same colors?

Identify, copy, and extend two element shape pattern.

The children will create a shape pattern using attribute blocks.

  1.  Have six children line up at the front of the class.
  2. Give large attribute blocks to each of the first five children to begin a shape pattern , such as circle/square, circle/square, circle.
  3. Put the last block in the pattern (square) in an envelop and give it to the six child.
  4. Have the rest of the class guess what shape comes next.
  5. Distribute six attribute shapes to each child have the child create a simple two shapes pattern.
  1. Can you identify what shapes comes next?
  2. Can you predict what shape comes next?
  3. Can you form another shape pattern using the same shapes?

The children will complete activity p. B6 (assessment)

  1. Have six children stand in front of the class.
  2. Give large attribute blocks to each of the first five children to begin a shape pattern, such as triangle/square, triangle/square, triangle.
  3. Put the last block in the pattern(square) in an envelop and give it to the six child.
  4. Have the rest of the children guess what shape comes next.
