1000’s Book

Did you know that mathematics is the study of number relationships and patterns?  Mathematicians look for, discover and create patterns.  Often, those patterns help us to understand the world better.

For example there are specific numerical relationships and patterns that make buildings stand strong, bridges support cars, bikes and people, and homes withstand hurricanes and other weather events.  Mathematicians create patterns (algorithms) to determine information.  For example, every time you web search on Google, they apply an algorithm (detailed instructions) as to how that search is done--you don’t get all the information on the web, you get the information that Google’s algorithm has decided is the right information for you.

In almost every aspect of your life, scientists, doctors, lawyers, store keepers and others are using mathematical patterns to serve you or encourage you to do certain actions.

Math is the basis of all life--almost everything in life can be reduced to a simple pattern or numerical (number) relationship.  That’s why many people consider math an art and a science!  True math is beautiful.

What Number Patterns Can We Look for in 1,000?

What is a pattern:  predictable order or arrangement of things.

Extended Learning: Add information to this chart.  We’ll discuss it again tomorrow.

What we Notice

Counting Numbers (counting by one)

Counting numbers are whole numbers, positive numbers starting with 1.

Even Numbers

(counting by 2)

  • All even numbers can be divided into two equal groups.
  • All even numbers are multiples of 2.
  • All even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8

Odd Numbers

  • Add two odd numbers together, always equal even #
  • Odd #s end in digits: 1,3,5,7,9
