Q: Any plans to have this EDU certified trainer program for a Google Apps Reseller in Argentina?

A: The EDU Certified Trainer program is an online process, so anyone can apply. More information at google.com/apps/teachertraining

________________________________________________________________

Q: Just wondering if anyone can answer this:  Can students use gmail accounts if under 13 in Canada if we have the parent's consent?

A: You must use Google Apps for Education for students under the age of 13 to use Gmail.

________________________________________________________________

Q: How does one become a Google Certified Teacher?

A: You must apply to attend the Google Teacher Academy. Applications for the next Google Teacher Academy have already closed. You can get more information at google.com/educators/gta.html

________________________________________________________________

Q: s there an age limit for Google Accounts?

A: Hi Mai, there is no age limit for accounts created with Google Apps for Education domains.

________________________________________________________________

Q: How do you embedd a Google custom search engine into your site?

A: You can configure the search box to use a google custom search engine. please see: http://edutraining.googleapps.com/Training-Home/module-5-sites/chapter-5/6-1

________________________________________________________________

Q: If we didn't have a Google Apps domain, can we just use Google Accounts in the meantime?

A: You must have Google Apps accounts to use with students under the age of 13. Over the age of 13, you can use regular Google accounts.

________________________________________________________________

Q: I have no idea how you use it for conference sign up - that would be cool to learn.

A: We use Google Docs/Spreadsheets and set the sharing settings so that anyone can view and Edit.  This means the teacher can set their schedule and then parents can sign up via the spreadsheet or Doc.  There are some cautions as anyone can view and edit so parents could sign up over each other or delete something, but we’ve never had a problem.

________________________________________________________________

Q: 2 questions.  1 - any concerns with having student pictures online?  2 - our district techies have told us we can only have 50 free student accounts and then we have to pay.  True?

A: Google Apps for Education can provide you with as many accounts if you need, for free - google.com/a/edu

A: We make sure that all parents sign a permission form for students to have their picture on the web.

________________________________________________________________

Q: I've used the various Google Apps tools, but I never figured out how to do the following:  1)  push data (such as homework assignments) to students/parents.  Ideally, they'd be able to subscribe to an announcements page on a site

A: You should be able to have an RSS feed generated if your Google Site is public for announcement style pages. One option to embed a Google Group is to use the iFrame gadget (under featured), or you can see the instructions here for a special gadget: https://sites.google.com/site/embeddingdiscussions/home/google-sites)

________________________________________________________________

Q: We can't just download Google apps.  We're on Linux.  Techies have to do it.  Suggestions?

A: Google Apps is not a download - it is a service you sign up for with a domain name. Check out google.com/a/edu for more information

________________________________________________________________

Q: Hi. I also work with google sites in my school, can you embed other gadgets that are not from google? I've tried but for security reasons I cannot

A: You can use the "iFrame" gadget or the "embed" gadget which is in the "Featured" gadget section. Have you tried those?

________________________________________________________________

Q: is sign-in required to access class sites?

A: It depends - you can make a site public or require sign-in.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Just wondering, can I have recording of this event for later reference?

A: All webinars are archived and available in the Google Apps for Education resource center: google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/resource_center.html

________________________________________________________________

Q: what is the cost of registerig each domain

A: Google Apps for Educaiton is free if you have a domain. If you do not already have a domain, you can pay $10/year for a domain and register it in the process.

Q: can you show us how to create a template?

A: When you have created the site that you would like to make into a template click on More Actions>Manage Site>General and scroll down to the bottom.  Click on Publish this site as a template and follow the wizard

________________________________________________________________

Q: can you change the links and number of pages, etc. when starting with a template like the edina one?

A: When you use a template, you basically just create a copy of that site. You can then customize it just as you would any other site (change links, photos, add/remove pages, etc)

________________________________________________________________

Q: who retains copyrights to the information, pics, etc. placed on the gogole sites?

A: You own all your data. You can review some common security/privacy question about Google Apps here: http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/privacy.html

________________________________________________________________

Q: If a domain is purchased for $10, does this disrupt the school's current domain?

A: You would probably purchase a separate domain (i.e. gowildcats.org) if you were going to purchase one. If you wanted to use your existing school domain, it may disrupt services if you want to switch your MX records for mail.

________________________________________________________________

Q: How do we edit the "more option" to categorize our last name and year if we have already created a webpage, but skipped that step?

A: For the site as a whole you can go into "More Actions" then "Manage Site" then go to "General" under site settings.

________________________________________________________________

Q: If students create websites and are graduating and their google account will be disabled, how can a teacher retain access to some of these websites as examples for next year?

A: The student should share the site with the teacher as an "owner" - then the teacher can retain access as the owner of the site.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can gadgets be turned off for a Googe Apps education domain?

A: You can choose to blacklist and whitelist gadgets using the Feed Service Client Tool: http://edutraining.googleapps.com/Training-Home/module-5-sites/chapter-8

You can also use the Domain Gadget Manager - see them at the bottom of this page under "management gadgets": http://www.google.com/support/sites/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=142987 or here: http://www.chanatown.net/2010/09/domain-gadget-directory-manager-dgdm.html

________________________________________________________________

Q:   Have you filtered your gadgets in domain?  Do you have a list of the gadgets seem to be the most useful in an educational setting?

A: Here are a few links

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can you copy and paste a Word doc?

A: Copying and pasting a word doc will be just like copying/pasting any other text.

________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________

Q: How close is google to having spreadsheets with higher funcitionality, privots, and the sort?

A: There are some gadgets available in spreadsheets that allow for pivot tables. In terms of other functionality, the Google Docs team is always busy improving their products!

________________________________________________________________

Q: I see the "subscribe"/RSS feed link;  I've never seen that in my environment, which only opens sites to members of my school's domain.  Is that correct?  You can only subscribe to an "open to the world" site?

A: Yes, you must have it open to the world in order for RSS to be enabled (see http://edutraining.googleapps.com/Training-Home/module-5-sites/chapter-3/6-7)

________________________________________________________________

Q: Please tell us how to get to the gadget that put homework on main page.

A: You just need to use the "Recent Announcements" gadget on any page, you can select the Homework page.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can you also link in a separate Blogger page?

A: You can link to anything! If your want to embed, you can use an RSS gadget, or an iFrame to bring in the whole website.

________________________________________________________________

Q: What's the best way to share 50+ websites on a google site?

A: Probably just type the websites and hyperlink each website. - use a regular webpage type.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can you 'hide' website pages and post them when needed?  Eg if you're doing a certain science topic one term but a different one the next term?

A: You can't make it private, but you can have it so it's not linked anywhere, and you don't publicize the sitemap link or have automatic navigation. If you customize your own navigation, you have control over what pages show up in the navigation

________________________________________________________________

Q: When creating link, check open in new window. Then  students still have original site open and they don't get lost.

________________________________________________________________

Q: What type of page is the links page?  A file cabinet?

A: It's just a regular webpage, hyperlinking the text (using the "Link" button to insert the link)

________________________________________________________________

Q: is there a way to post available classes and allow students to sign up with Google sites?

A: There's no easy way to do this, but you might try using Forms and Google Sites together...

________________________________________________________________

Q: How are permissions controlled in a district domain?

A: For Google Sites, a domain may choose to allow the option for sites to be published to the world or only available in the domain

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can pdf files be used?

A: You can use the "file cabinet" page type to attach PDF files. There's no way to directly embed PDF files at this time.

A: You can use an iframe to show it just like an embeded Google Doc. Or better yet, have them upload the PDF into Google Docs and add it from there.

________________________________________________________________

Q: How did you move the search box to the center of the page?

A: More Actions> Site Layout>Change Site Layout

Alignment Vertical Middle

Horizontal Center

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can you import del.ic.ious bookmarks in a google site?  Is there a gadget for that?

A: You might just try searching the gadget directory, somebody may have created a gadget for that (I imagine someone has)

________________________________________________________________

A: More Actions>Share this Site>Permissions>Sharing

________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________

Q: Copy this site is really helpful if you are creating a site for different classes.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can you embed a video on the left hand column?

A: Not easily... You might be able to if you can do HTML coding (in a text box) but I'm not sure if it will render.

________________________________________________________________

Q: How to create the running text / marquee in google sites

A: Your best bet is to find a gadget to do that. It's not built into sites.

________________________________________________________________

Q: in the navigation area in the sidebar - can I get these to open in a new window?  I have other links in the middle section that I did get to open in a new page

A: If you use the "Text Box" gadget in the side bar, you can use the same link style button. For the navigation gadget, you can't specify new windows. If oyu want to specify new windows, you can type in your own navigation using a regular text box and link

________________________________________________________________

Q: can you embed a video anywhere else on the site? or is it only available as a link?

A: You can embed videos on the regular pages of the site - you can use insert video (google video or youtube) or insert a gadget - there is a vimeo gadget - otherwise if it's not hosted online, you'd probably have to have it as a link.

________________________________________________________________

Q: When a school purchases a Googe Apps domain, how long does it take?  Is there trouble shooting support for these domains?

A: There's a 2-3 week delay in upgrading the domain to Education Edition, but otherwise it's available immediately for use with 50 users or less. Once upgraded to Education version, you can request more accounts for free.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can anyone make comments on a page, like they can on a wiki?

A: Yes, but the issue is that in order to make comments they have to be a collaborator on the Google Site.  There are not page based permissions for Google Sites so they have all or nothing editing rights on the page.  On the bottom of each page there is a comments box for collaborators of the website.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can teachers edit the calendars that are embedded on the site or is it just for viewing?

A: The teachers edit the calendar on Google Calendar not on the website.  The embedded website will reflect all of the changes that are updated on the Google Calendar

Edit Sidebar>Edit Navigation>Add Page>Select Page>Ok>Ok>Save Changes>Return to Site

________________________________________________________________

Q: When did the students full names appears...and how do we avoid it?
