Grades to Expect
· Presentation grade: 96 points in the Final Exam part of your course grade.
· Evaluation grades: 60 points in the Test part of your course grade.
Project Requirements
In groups of two or three, you will present a 10-minute presentation during which you will present you analysis of sources from an assigned news category.
Quick-reference requirement guide (see rubric for criteria):
· 10 minutes
· 4 pieces from different news sources
· Equal contribution on all members’ parts
· Professional dress during presentation
· Evaluation essay—one of each member covering different articles
· Professional PowerPoint
· Implementation of professional presentation skills
Expectations: News Sources
As a group, you must have four total sources. Two of these news sources must be hard-copy/printable sources, such as news articles from a website or newspaper. The remaining two sources may be any of the following:
The sources must come from the following locations
Expectations: Time-limit and organization
Your presentation need to last ten minutes. Use the following guide to assist you in timeing and organizing your presentation:
News Context: 1-2 minutes
Source discussions: 1.5-2 minutes each, totaling 6-8 minutes
Overall truths discussion/conclusion: 1-2 minutes
Expectations: Preparedness and Contribution
Each group member is expected to demonstrate their preparedness and contribution to the group on presentation day. Ways to demonstrate preparedness/contribution:
· All group members contribute information to each source discussed on presentation day
· All group members speak during all parts of the presentation on presentation day
· No group member appears to have taken all of the roles from other group members.
Expectations: Attire
Each group member is required to dress professionally on presentation day. Dress as though this presentation is an interview for a high-paying job. To earn full credit for this portion of the assignment, men should wear a tie and suit jacket and women should wear a skirt or suit jacket.
Expectations: Pauses and Transitions; PowerPoint
During the presentation, be sure to use effective presentation skills. Practice using transitional phrases (just like you do in your writing!) and pausing instead of using words like “um” or “like.” Avoid introducing your project like this: “Our project was about…” or “We did ours on…” Try beginning with a hook to create interest within the audience- maybe an interesting fact about bias or persuasion or propaganda. Be creative!
Additionally, be sure the PowerPoint slides themselves are attractive, professional, and not wordy. The slides should guide you through the presentation- not become the main attraction. Be on the lookout for more information/examples to help with creating an effective and professional Powerpoint.
