Redding Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends

September 12, 2010

Visit our website at http://reddingfriends.blogspot.com/

Present:  Doug Milhous, Doris Bond, Joanna Mooney, Tom Morehouse and Susie Morehouse

Minutes:  Review and approval of August Meeting for Business Minutes.

Treasurer:  Doris reports we have a bank account balance of $1,824.38.  She has paid our rent to the UMC through December 2010.

Mail:  Tom brought in the minutes sent to us by other Monthly Meetings.

Ministry and Oversight:  Joanna has agreed to remain on M&O.  The committee membership consists of Susie, Joanna and Joy.  Joanna volunteered to host the October Dinner Among Friends at her residence.  This is scheduled for October 1 at 6pm.  A discussion among Friends present will be centered on the topic of paying taxes.

Unity With Nature:  It was suggested that during our November Dinner Among Friends gathering we might have discussion that updates us on our individual progress towards our goals.

Peace and Social Order:  The Soldier Suicide Vigil was rescheduled for September 22.  Friends present approved expenditures up to $100 for this project by the committee.  Susie volunteered to update the flyer.  Editorial Note:  The vigil was held as planned on September 22.  The site of the vigil was the Diestlehorst Bridge.  The weather was cooperative and quite beautiful overlooking the River.  The signs and banner were immaculate.  Interest from passersby was expressed.  Several of us were present to support and bring more local attention to this cause.

As to the upcoming Stand Down event at the Shasta District Fairgrounds on October 23, there will be two training sessions for volunteers:  October 6 at 2pm  and October 20 at 5:30 pm at the Veterans Hall.  Anyone who is planning to volunteer at the Stand Down must attend one of these trainings.

Interfaith Report:  Susie will contact Karen Stanley of the First Christian Church to get the details of this year’s CROP Walk.  Friends can donate money and the Meeting will match up to $100.

Doris reported that Lyn Fritz will be conducting a grief workshop however the date is unknown at this time.

Doris announced that she has paid $100 of her personal funds to sponsor a table, on behalf of Redding Friends Meeting, for the upcoming Francis Court graduation celebration.  As you may be aware, our Meeting has helped sponsor one family/one apartment at Francis Court, which is a program of Faithworks.  This event will be held October 23 at 6pm at Bethel Church.  If you are interested in attending please let Doris know.  Her table will seat 8 people.

Old/New Business

Annual Methodist Brunch:  Our annual brunch for the United Methodist Church membership effort is scheduled for November 7.  As always Susie and Doris will be spearheading the planning efforts.  As in the past, everyone who can help will be asked to sign up.  Please mark your calendar for this important date.  This is important in the main sense that this event has proven to be our major annual fundraiser.

LGBTQ Sensitivity Training Workshop:  Amongst Friends, there was good attendance at this training held recently.  Doris, Joy, Margaret, George and Elsie were all there.  It was reported that equality was emphasized and affording the same rights to everyone as well.

It was suggested that we make this topic our discussion (becoming at LGBTQ affirming church) at our December 3 Dinner Among Friends.

Garage Sale:  The topic of having a garage sale came up as income from this is included in our annual budget.  Sue and Tom agreed to contact Josh and Megan to see if we can hold it in their yard even though they will be gone October 9.
