The children will learn how we use the garbage trucks in our community.

What type of truck is this? 

  1. Ask the children if they know what happens to the trash their parents put outside.
  2. Read aloud the poem, “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Who Would Not Take the Garbage Out.”
  3. Ask: What happened to the little girl in the poem? Who is responsible for taking care of the trash?
  4. Show the children a garbage truck.
  5. Ask: Have ever seen one in their community? What does a garbage truck does in our community?  Where does the garbage goes after is picked up? What would happen if the garbage truck did not pick up the garbage from your community?

Why is important to reuse, reduce, recycle? 

  1. The teacher will explain what are some of our resources.
  2. Ask: Why is it important to conserve, or save our resources?
  3. The teacher will explain what the children can do to save our resources.
  4. Introduce the word: recycle, reuse, reduce.
  5. Ask: How can we cut down on trash? Which creates less trash, using lunch boxes or paper bags? using a dish towel or paper towel? Using dishes or paper plate?
  6. Discuss helping our community and our Earth?
  7. Ask: How does recycling paper at school helps the Earth? Why people turn the water off when they are brushing their teeth? What would happen if we began to run out of water? What should we do to stop that from happening?
  8. Distribute construction paper, glue, and different pieces of construction paper.
  9. Have the children form a construction truck using the shapes.
