 The children will act out to solve a joining problem.

  1.  Recite the Chant Once Upon a Chant.
  2. Have six children stand at the front of the classroom.
  3. Say the first two lines of the first verse.
  4. Have three of the children hop like frogs to the door.
  5. Say the third line and have other three children hop to the door.
  6. Have the children answer how many in all.
  7. Ask two more groups to act the remaining verses.
  8. Repeat, having the children show joined groups of other numbers to six.

 The children will add beans to solve a joining problem.

  1. The teacher will review story elements.
  2.  The teacher will read “Jack and the Bean Stalk.”
  3. Have the children answer the following questions: How much money Jack’s mother gave him? How many beans did he get for that amount of money?
  4. Distribute Teaching Tool 24 and six beans and crayons.
  5. The teacher will tell an joining story about Jack and the Bean Stalk.
  6. Have the children put four beans into one box and two in the other box at the top of Teaching Tool 24 according to the joining story.
  7. After the children count the beans in each group , have them move all the beans into the larger area at the bottom .
  8. Have the children count the total number of beans.
  9. Repeat, having the children show joined groups of other numbers to 6.

  1.  Distribute activity p. 227.
  2. Direct the children’s attention to the top of page 227.
  3. Ask the children to listen as I tell a story about the cats: “I see 3 cats playing with yarn. Two other cats wake up and join them.”
  4. Guide the children as they trace the dashed 3 to show that here are 3 cats in the first part.
  5. Elicit that 2 cats join them as the children trace the 2 to show that there are 2 cats in the second part.
  6. Ask, “How many cats are there in all?”
  7. Tell the children to trace the number 5, which tells how many cats there are in the two whole groups.
  8. Repeat, with other joining exercises in page 227.

  1.  Recount the story of “Cinderella.”
  2. Say a story problem: The step mother gave Cinderella three dresses to wash. (Place three dresses.) The step sister gave Cinderella one more. (Draw one dress.)How many dresses does Cinderella needs to wash in all?
  3. Ask the children to pick out the numbers from the problem , then write 3=1 on the board.
