Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Others Launch Facebook GOTV Strategy Through "Voting Blocks" App
Every organization in the country now has the tools to create an extremely effective online “Get Out The Vote” operation.
October 31, 2012 – Fight for the Future, the groundbreaking Internet freedom advocacy group behind the historic grassroots movement against SOPA/PIPA and Personal Democracy Media, launched “Voting Blocks” to help organizations encourage their supporters to vote and to show just how influential they are this election. Every organization in the country now has the tools to create an extremely effective online “Get Out The Vote” operation.
Organizations can set up “Voting Blocks” so members can engage their social network in voting, reaching supporters who care about their cause to vote more effectively than ever before. “Voting Blocks” allow organizations, communities, and any group of people to leverage the power of social networks to get members and their wider social network to vote. As voters confirm that they have voted or pledge to vote, organizations will be able to display a measure of their electoral influence to legislators, to the media, and to the public.
Just a few of the organizations that will be using voting blocks this election include the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Rebuild the Dream, both of which will start constituent “voting blocks” November 1.
“‘Voting Blocks’ are an innovative way to not just to get people to the polls but also to demonstrate the electoral strength behind a particular social or legislative agenda." said Tiffiniy Cheng, co-founder of Fight for the Future.
"Using new tools like Voting Blocks is part of our core mission to empower our members,” said Ian Kim, Managing Director of Rebuild the Dream. “We're excited to see how our members use these new tools to make their electoral impact even bigger, simply by activating their personal networks.”
Voting Blocks add new functionality to Fight for the Future’s already innovative GOTV application “Vote with Friends”, a non-partisan initiative that uses social media and public data to increase voter registration and turnout. Vote with Friends makes voting social and easy - it allows users to pledge to vote and communicate their pledge in order to influence friends. After the election Vote with Friends will allow users to see which of their friends actually voted.
The “Vote with Friends” effort will start on November 1st, "Get Your Friends to Vote" Day and crescendo on Election Day, giving people ample time to get involved and spread the word.
About Fight for the Future
Fight for the Future (FFTF) is a nonprofit working to expand the Internet’s power for good and is known for its powerful and massive viral organizing campaigns that have changed Internet history. This year, they helped create what some have called the "Internet Spring", winning three out of three political battles for internet freedom - defeating SOPA and CISPA in the US and ACTA in Europe. Faced with the passage of Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect-IP Act (PIPA) — legislation that would have jeopardized the open Internet as we know it — FFTF organized the largest and most visible online protest in history. FFTF followed up by launching the Internet Defense League, a group of sites which promise to alert the entire internet to legislation and corporate policies that threaten internet freedoms.
