Brooklyn, NY - At University Settlement on Friday and Saturday, September 30 and October 1, 2011, TILT Brass presents the World Premiere of GARDEN II: House, a newly commissioned intermedia work (music and video) by Santa Fe-based composer, performer, media artist and United States Artists Simon Fellow Chris Jonas. In addition to the integral video and installation production work by Santa Fe-based Littleglobe, GARDEN II: House features local heroes of creative music Herb Robertson on trumpet and Joe Fiedler on trombone, along with the composer on soprano saxophone and TILT Brass Director Chris McIntyre also on trombone. House is staged within the unusual set-up of a cube of transparent video screens that envelop the performing quartet. This innovative blend of acoustic musical interactivity with three dimensional video projection garnered the project a prestigious Meet the Composer Commissioning Music/USA award in 2010.
GARDEN II: House is a collaboration between Jonas (as both composer and video maker), the members of TILT Brass’ quartet, and the creative team of Littleglobe. In Jonas' words:
"...the result is a 45-minute intermedia composition mixing live music and projected video of imaginary human structures and landscapes. Within this immersive sensory environment, House explores the fundamentally subjective human experience of the world around us and how we "fill in the blanks" when facing too little information.”
Over the past 2 years, Jonas and his colleagues at Littleglobe have shot and edited video content for projection on the cube-like black transparent screens (scrim) that envelop the movement and sound of the performers. The intended audience experience is synaesthetic - combining abstract and specific imagery, evoking expressive, atmospheric, metaphoric, psychological, and cross-cultural realms of place, dwelling, urban identity and the human environment.
The music of the second chapter of GARDEN exploits the expansive textural and timbral realms made available by employing this stellar brass-based quartet. With a mixture of strategic improvisation and through-composition, House’s broad pallet of sound is generated by employing various soundscaping concepts: inter-ensemble cueing practices, virtuosic instrumentalism, extended techniques and an eclectic tool bag of compositional styles. The music is evocative of an unusual set of influences and models specific to this chapter of GARDEN. These points of reference include the folktale-like formal constructions of writers Italo Calvino and Julio Cortezar, the chamber music of Béla Bartók and Morton Feldman, the notated and ensemble improvisational structures of Anthony Braxton, Larry Austin’s use of unsynchronized duets in ensemble contexts, David Byrne’s ensemble music for Knee Plays, and Brian Eno’s Index of Metals.
Each of the participating musicians is equally comfortable working with complex musical compositions as well as broad improvisational environments. Downtown trumpet legend Herb Robertson infuses each of his performances with the richness of experience afforded by an illustrious creative life that includes important work as a leader and in collaborations with Tim Berne, Mark Helias, Gerry Hemmingway, John Zorn, among many others. Trombonist Joe Fiedler is a highly sought-after collaborator and band leader who Harvey Pekar in Signal To Noise touted as “among the most impressive trombonists to emerge in the past couple of decades.” Chris McIntyre’s trombone playing and programming skills led Time Out New York to locate him as “central to the new-music experience in New York."
These World Premiere performances are part of a larger series of pieces under the GARDEN rubric, all of which explore the use of acoustic music ensembles performing within an immersive video environment. The first two chapters of GARDEN, including the GARDEN I: Night with the Del Sol String Quartet, are being presented together in June 2012 as the opening event of the CURRENTS Festival at Railyard Park in Santa Fe, NM.

Jonas is now at work on a number of new projects including a multiple year intermedia and music piece GARDEN with ensembles the San Francisco-based Del Sol String Quartet (Garden I "Night") and most recently NYC's TILT Brass (Garden II "House").
New York City 1991-2001
While based in NYC, the 1990s saw Jonas working internationally as a soprano saxophone player, composer and band-leader. He recorded 25 albums and toured cities worldwide as a performer, guest conductor, and composer with jazz and experimental music ensembles led by Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Butch Morris, William Parker, the Brooklyn Sax Quartet and his own critically recognized ensemble, Sun Spits Cherries.
Jonas has taught music and media at Wesleyan University, the College of Santa Fe and most recently at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. He is vice president of Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Foundation and has appeared on recent releases of a number of Braxton's recent albums. In 2008, Jonas received the United States Artists Award in music and media as Simon Fellow.

Trumpeter Herb Robertson became active as a member of the NY Downtown Improviser's scene in 1980. He has since traveled the world playing in jazz and creative music festivals. Robertson has toured extensively as a musician and leader throughout the USA, international clubs and other related venues. Herb brings a special kind of modern lyricism through his trumpet and other wind-type instruments, having influenced a younger generation of trumpeters and musicians alike. Robertson’s music is simultaneously a game of equals and a parody of excesses, with an irreverent use of structured freedom. Trombonist/composer Joe Fiedler is known to critics as “among the most impressive trombonists to emerge in the past couple of decades” (Signal to Noise) and “an MVP in configurations that range from salsa bands to the jazz avant-garde” (Time Out New York). Based in New York since 1993, he has performed and recorded in a long and eclectic list of musical settings ranging from pop (Wycleff Jean, Jennifer Lopez) to Afro-Caribbean (Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri) to jazz (Andrew Hill, Lee Konitz) to the avant-garde (Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor). In addition to work as a solo trombonist and leader of the groups the Joe Fiedler Trio and Big Sackbut, Fiedler is an active member of such ensembles as Bob Stewart's First Line Band, Fast and Bulbous, and the big bands of Satoko Fujii, Ed Palermo and Charles Tolliver among others. Christopher McIntyre leads a multi-faceted career as performer, composer, and curator/producer. The diversity of his activities led Time Out New York to note that "...with every passing week, trombonist-composer Chris McIntyre becomes more central to the new-music experience in New York." (Nov. '09) He interprets and improvises on trombone and synthesizer in projects including TILT Brass, Ne(x)tworks, and Either/Or. McIntyre's trombone skills have been utilized in groups such as SEM Ensemble, Flexible Orchestra, and The Knights, and in composer-led projects of Zeena Parkins, David First, Michael Schumacher, Elliott Sharp, Jonathan Bepler (w/ Matthew Barney), and Anthony Coleman. His playing is heard on recordings released by the Non-Site, Tzadik, New World, and Mode labels. McIntyre is also active as a curator and concert producer. He co-founded TILT Brass in 2003, and has been Director since 2006. Independent curatorial projects at venues including The Kitchen, Issue Project Room, and The Stone (June 2007).
