Redding Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends
Tenth Month, October 18, 2010
In attendance: Doug Milhous, Tom Morehouse, Doris Bond, Joanna Mooney, Margaret
Turner and Kathleen Findlay.
Approval of Minutes: We reviewed and approved the last month’s minutes.
Treasurer’s Report: Doris reported that the meeting has $1,1773.03. Doris recently paid
the phone bill of $30.31 and deposited a contribution of $12.
Review of Mail: Tom reported he reviewed the mail which consisted mainly of
minutes/newsletters from other Monthly Meetings.
Ministry & Oversight: Just to check on the welfare of Friends and attenders, Susie has
been contacting members/attenders who have been infrequently attending Meeting.
Meeting had expressed some concern that we had not been seeing some folks. Susie and
Joanna had recently met as M&O. The Committee suggested that the Meeting be queried
for interest in reading and discussing the Dalai Lama's book "Compassionate Life". At
today's meeting nothing was decided on this.
Dinner Among Friends on October 29 will be at the Milhous' place just north of Redding.
Doug will send out an email with both the schedule and driving directions to his home.
Friends are asked to bring a salad, side dish, bread or dessert as Doug and Linda will be
providing the main dish. Doug suggested we have a discussion on our individual state of
affairs concerning our Unity with Nature related personal goals.
Dinner Among Friends in December will be held on December 3. Doug suggested that our
discussion be on the subject of Redding Friends Meeting becoming a LGBTQ affirming
church. The location for dinner will be decided upon later. To obtain more information on
this subject, Doris will contact Heather Hennessey of the First Christian Church.
Unity with Nature: No report was given.
Peace & Social Order: Joanna reported on a decision that both she and Margaret have
made concerning the soldier suicide vigil project. Their effort will become a "grassroots
organization" independent of any organization including Friends Meeting. Should Meeting
decide to continue providing any support, financial or otherwise, it would be accepted.
Doris reported that there is $43 remaining of the $100 previously approved by Meeting for
the vigil. Some of these funds will be used to pay an outstanding bill. Friends approved
another $50 for use for this purpose.
Interfaith Forum: Doris informed us that this year's Thanksgiving service will
be held at St. Joseph's Church in Redding on November 21 at 7:30 p.m. Doris
said she had suggested that instead of a top 10 things to be thankful for that
instead participating churches present "Our Top 10 What Ifs". The time limit
is 2 minutes. Doug will again coordinate our efforts to develop this list and
he will present as he did last year. Friends are asked to email Doug with
their suggestions and that perhaps these suggestions can be based on Quaker
Testimonies.
Old Business:
Meeting the Quakers. Planning for this year's Meet the Quakers event
was to be planned by Doug, Bonnie and Joanna. Unfortunately this
committee has not been able to meet to plan. Doug will initiate a meeting
and because of the lateness and need to have more time to properly prepare
and announce the meeting, it may be rescheduled.
Moving the Phone. Bonnie had volunteered to look into this but has
not yet made a report to Meeting so this item was tabled for now.
Movie Night. Margaret had organized our initial movie night but is now
too busy to continue doing so. Kathleen volunteered to organize a movie
night for the spring.
Coming Events:
Stand Down: Some Friends volunteered to help with this event on
Saturday October 23. While we were not very busy and felt somewhat
underutilized, we definitely felt part of the event and witnessed many
veterans who were in need of much help being helped by many.
Methodist Brunch. This year's Brunch served for our Methodist hosts
will be Sunday November 7. Doris will be unable to help Susie this year as
she has to attend the funeral of a family member in Portland. Tom will have
a sign up sheet available for volunteers at meeting on October 24. Like in
years past we will need helpers on Saturday November 6 at 3 pm for meal
preparation. For Sunday we will also need helpers at either 8am or 10am.
Contact Sue or Tom at 244-6216 if you have any questions.
Meeting Schedule:
November 14 at 11:00 a.m. Meeting for Worship - Doris will provide
food and handle childcare if necessary. Doug will provide a ride to Joanna
Respectfully submitted,
Tom Morehouse
