PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As your President, John Smith, is on vacation, I am writing this article to tell you why you should sign up for our September 15 Flight Championships and Membershilp Banquet.  There are so many reasons.

First, you could win stuff.  We are a very thrifty club.  Our tournaments are self supporting.  Your dues do pay for CTP award balls and trophies.  About half of your dues go to the SCGA, so you can have a GHIN number.  So many members use our website, that we save significant money on paper and postage.  This year, we have more money left over for raffle item and cash give-aways than ever before.  We will be offering balls, gloves, clubs, bags, shirts, hats, wine, training aids and cash to win.

Our luncheon will be a BBQ buffet.  You pay only $10, less than half of the actual cost, to share a meal with your friends.

You could win a Flight Championship trophy.  We start play on Mesa Linda from a shotgun at 7:15.  The low net individuals in the A, B and C flights join the Hall of Fame on our website and in the locker room.

Someone is going to be crowned as our Club Champion.  This competition starts with a round on Los Lagos on Wednesday, September 14.  The low gross from Wednesday and Thursday wins our Club Championship trophy and a paid entry into one of several SCGA Tournament of Club Champions in December.  We have 16 slots that will be available to the lowest handicap eligible players that sign up by the Wednesday, September 7 deadline.  We have over 20 members with single digit handicaps that would have a reasonable chance, but to compete for this honor, a member must have played at least three of our regular events during the past 12 months.

This is also the time for the members to elect the Board of Directors for the next year.  Recent newsletters have asked for members to let us know if they have an interest in helping out our club.  We were happy to hear from Rich Claus that he can help with Membership duties, and Ron Plummer can help with Tournament planning.  The current board members have expressed a willingness to serve through the next year, but some will be considering retirement after that.  The board usually meets after the third Thursday tournaments for about one hour.  Feel free to talk to one of the board members, if you want to learn more about what is involved.

Vice-President

HANDICAP REPORT

As most of you know, the purpose of the USGA handicap system is to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling players of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis.  The system provides a fair course handicap for each player.

The two basic premises that underlie the USGA handicap system are:

Every player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round

Every player will post every acceptable round accurately

My job as handicap chairman is to insure that each member of CMSGA complies with the above two requirements.  That is why I review the scorecards from each tournament and report the posting errors of our members.

A review of the August 4, 2011 tournament scorecards revealed the following posting errors:

Bob Colclough failed to adjust using Equitable Stroke Control

Sparks McClellan posted Home instead of Tournament

Paul Fulton posted Home instead of Tournament

Rick Logan posted Home instead of Tournament and failed to adjust his score

Tom Thomas posted incorrect score (too low)

Fred Detkin posted incorrect score (too high)

Milt Halsted posted incorrect score (too low)

Pete Kaplan posted incorrect score (too high)

Those errors have been corrected by your handicap chairman.  Please remember to post in a timely and accurate manner.
