Show how to make a group of 3 objects.

- Whole Group: Sing Song “Let’s Count 1, 2, 3”

- Small Group: Use their sense of sight to describe three objects at each table.  They will use the objects to match them to number cards.

- Guided Practice: Children will use play dough to make the number 3 and match their number to a group of 3.

- Independent Practice:

Group 1 Activity: Counting cotton balls to tell how many.

Group 2 Activity: Use counters to make groups of numbers one to three and write the number on individual blackboards.

Group 3 Activity: Use 2 to 3 popsicle sticks to make uppercase letters, than write next to the letter the number of sticks they used to make each letter.

- If you have two cotton balls and then one more. How many do you have?

- Show how to match your group of objects to a number.

- Arrange your objects to show groups of one, two and three.

- Whole Group: Sing Song, “Sesame Street - Counting to 4”

- Small Group: Use their sense of sight to describe one to four objects at each table.  They will use the objects to match them to number cards.

- Guided Practice: Choose the number 4 card and draw a group of 4 objects and write the number 4.

- Independent Practice:

Group 1 Activity: Glue 4 pieces of macaroni on small paper plates. Children can share the plates and count to 4 by touching each piece of macaroni.

Group 2 Activity: Use stickers to make groups of 1-4 to match the given number.

Group 3 Activity: Draw a picture of “1” and “4” story.  

I have 1 flower. It has 4 petals.

I have 1 wagon. It has 4 wheels.

-  What number comes after 3? How do you know?

- Do you have the same number of objects as your number card?

- Compare two groups of objects and tell which has 1 more and 1 fewer.

- Whole Group: Recite, “5 Dogs, 5 Bones”

- Whole Group: Play “Mind Reader” game.

- Small Group: Using their sense of sight.  Place 3 to 5 objects on the tables. Children will observe objects and then close their eyes. Remove one object and they have to guess which object was removed.

- Whole Group: Use their sense of sight to read a predictable poem on the Smart Board to count and write numbers 1 - 5.

- Independent Practice:

Group 1: Use number cards to show the quantity they represent by holding up fingers and then placing counters for each number.  

Group 2: Use cards with 1 - 5 objects and match them to the correct number card.

Group 3: Use individual blackboards to write numbers 1 - 5 and draw groups of objects for each number.

- Are there the same amount of bones as there are dogs? Which group has more/less?

- Tell which object is missing? How do you know?

- What is your favorite thing to see in the fall season? Why?

- How can you use numbers when your playing?
