What Does it Cost to Save the World?

By Koozma J. Tarasoff

What does $1.6 trillion dollars for military spending look like?  Many, many times larger than the sum required to overcome poverty in the world today.

A 2-minute video about a project for the “Global Day of Action on Military Spending” — Go Figure – What Would It Cost to Save the World?  — shows how students made a chart on their campus lawn to illustrate the relatively tiny cost of saving the world versus the huge cost of military spending

For proponents of the nonkilling paradigm in society, the video is a quick, but powerful reference to an important societal task for humanity.  It points in the direction of our survival on planet earth, by providing priorities for food, shelter, health, education, global sanitation, clean drinking water, stopping the spread of aids, environmental sustainability and cultural development. The video supports the Golden Rule: ‘Do unto others what you want others to do unto you.’
