  7. Have the children solve the problem.
  8. Repeat, changing the story problem to reflect other  addition facts with sums up to 6.

Identify the equal sign and solve addition sentence with sums up to 6.

The children will find the sums of hearts using the equal sign.

  1.  Tape four cards ( 1 heart, plus sign, 4hearts) to butcher paper to show addition expressions.
  2. Say the addition expression aloud.
  3. Have one volunteer stand in front of the “1” card and four volunteers in front of the “4” card.
  4. Punt the equal card in position.
  5. Have the children act out the joining action by moving into one group after the equal sign.
  6. Have the class tell how many hearts there are in all, then display the “5” card. Point out is that 5 is the sum. Explain that the sum tells how many in all and comes after the equal sign.
  7. Repeat the activities with different children and different cards, having the class name the sum each time.
