Course Overview: The 6th grade science curriculum consists of these main units: preparation for Deep Portage, Matter, Energy, Force, Motion, Gravity and Waves. Each unit is taught using a combination of the Full Option Science System (FOSS) kits and Holt Science textbook. Science is mainly studied in cooperative groups. Much of the leaning is inquiry based, and involves hands on learning through the use of science labs and the scientific method. Learning is also supplemented through the use of an integrated science textbook series.

Materials: Each student is required to have a spiral notebook to be used for a science journal throughout the year. In addition, students are asked to have a folder or three-ring binder for handouts colored pencils or pens available.  Students should also come to class prepared with a pen or pencil.

Grading Policy: check grades on campus daily.

Extra Credit: Students may have the opportunity to complete extra credit assignments during a unit at the teacher’s discretion.  Missing assignments must be completed before extra credit is assigned.

Retests/Redo: Students may choose one assignment or assessment to retake or redo per unit. They must complete the retest/redo within one week of receiving the graded assignment. In addition, if a student receives a failing grade on any assignment they may correct their mistakes and return their assignment for a 70%.

Excused/Absent -Make up work is due without penalty within 1 week of a student returning to school.  After 1 week the assignment will be considered late/unexcused and follow the corresponding penalties.

Unexcused/Late Work- Late work will be accepted with a penalty of 1 letter grade per class the assignment is late.  Late work must be turned in within one week of the due date.  If the work is not made up by this point the student will receive a zero for the assignment.

Cheating – Cheating is a serious offense.  If a student is caught cheating on an assignment or test their parent will be notified and they will be referred.  Cheating will result in an immediate zero for the assignment in addition to the consequences set forth in the RMS Student-Parent Handbook.

Student Expectations: Students are expected to adhere to all expectations stated in the RMS Student-Parent Handbook. Students are also expected to come to class prepared with all necessary materials and assignments. Students are required to respect each other, school property, and the property of others.  Students are also expected to work to the best of their ability at all times.
