Chapter 8

Chapter 9

1. At the start of chapter 9 there is a showdown between Jamal and one of his teammates. Using cartoon-style drawing with captions, label the characters and create a four-frame cartoon that illustrates Jamal’s showdown on the court.

2. In the rest of chapter 9 we experience Jamal’s interactions with three different people: Mr. Crawford, William Forrester, and his mother, Janice Wallace. At this point in the story, decide whether each has a predominantly positive or negative influence on Jamal. Cite at least two quotes from each of these characters as supporting evidence. State each character’s influence as a thesis statement, and write two supporting characters quotes in each box.

Chapter 10

1. At the start of chapter 10, Jamal finds himself in an uncomfortable position following his very successful basketball game. He makes a choice about where to go after the game. This choice is symbolic of Jamal’s conflicted thoughts and his dual identities. Considering Jamal’s neighbourhoods, friends, schools, socioeconomic position, and/or heritage, use the template to create a word and/or image mandala that represents Jamal’s two worlds.

2.  During the rest of chapter 10, Jamal attends a big after-game party at Claire’s house. Do one of the following:

• Sketch an interior or exterior view of the Spence Estate
• Write Claire’s diary entry following the party. Describe her feelings for Jamal.
• Using classified ad format, write Dr. Spence’s description of the ideal mate for Claire. (i.e. Wanted: ….)

Chapters 11

1. Quote an example of “home talk” used by Jamal. What does “home talk” mean to him?

Chapter 12

1. In chapter 12 William Forrester suffers a panic attack when Jamal takes him to a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. With the help of Jamal’s brother Terrell, the three leave the crowded basketball game taking William to Yankee Stadium, which is closed for the winter.
