About: Sky High Gallery is pleased to welcome San Francisco based artist Catherine Ryan with her first Milwaukee solo exhibit. These Things They Do, is a new collection of 15 gouache and charcoal drawings on paper. Ryan’s work has been shown around the world, printed in numerous publications and she has collaborated with the accliamed Australian based Third Drawer Down and Sky High Gallery couldn’t be more excited that she will be in attendance at her show in Milwaukee on Friday, September 9th from 6-10pm
Catherine Ryan’s newest body of work examines man's desire to exert control over what he fears and does not understand through various systems of order and ritual. The oddities and absurdities of dogma, ceremony and symbology. Ryan last showed her work in Milwaukee at curator Faythe Levine’s past location, Paper Boat Gallery in 2008 along with Milwaukee artist Eduardo Villanueva.
Read a 2008 review by Meighn O’Toole from My Love For You of Catherine Ryan exhibit in Milwaukee.
Additional Opening Night Details: Printshop Forever is an online resource exploring the area between art and craft. In collaboration with Sky High Gallery, PSF will be presenting the work of Becky Johnson of Sweetie Pie Press and her limited edition series Awards for Nothing. These awards were created through Becky’s constant collecting of ephemera while on her 2011 coast-to-coast Summer Craft Tour. Materials used in the edition include business papers, vintage wrapping papers from junk stores in Berkley and Oakland, ephemera from friends’ houses, ribbons, vintage fabrics, sewing materials from a drygoods shop in Arcata, countless scraps and ribbons from her mother’s collection in Vancouver and just plain old garbage Becky found attractive.
Ever wonder what you'd look like if you weren't quite so gorgeous? Well here's your chance to let the Good Reverend Aitor enlighten you with one of his patented Unflattering Portraits. For a nominal fee, the Reverend's bleary eye will spot your "problem areas'' and commit them to paper, bring your very wrinkle, crease, pimple, scar and busted vein to the forefront. Said fee is up to you. Pay what you think its worth. Avoid the rush and schedule your sitting now.

If you are driving by at any hour check out Edition #5 of the Temporary Mural Project featuring Vanessa Andrews. The Temporary Mural Project is an outdoor 8'x 8' space on the East wall of Sky High, facing Howell Ave. Milwaukee based artist's are invited to create a piece of work in their studio that is later installed on the wall for durations of 3 months. These temporary murals brighten the community, promote growth and creativity in our neighborhood all while giving the artist street side exposure. Postcards of each mural are printed and available for free while supplies last in the shop.
