General Software Requirements, Viewers and Plugins Moodle ISU


Introduction
This document lists the minimum software requirements for courses in Moodle along with instructions and links to download the software. Your courses may require additional software.  Please go through each section to ensure that you have the minimum software and that it is up to date.

This guide will help you to:

Install Firefox

Firefox is the recommended browser to use with Moodle ISU.

  1. Mozilla Firefox Download
  1. To install Firefox:
  1. Open another browser (i.e. Safari, Internet Explorer)
  2. Type firefox.com in the address bar.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Click Free Download.

  1. Open the file.
  2. Install Firefox.
  1. Once installed, you should see a Firefox icon on the desktop.
  1. If you already have Firefox, make sure it is up to date by Checking Your Version of Firefox.

Install Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader is used to open PDF files.

  1. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.

Install Adobe Flash Player

The Adobe flash player is used to play flash video files on Moodle ISU.  Not all video files in Moodle are flash videos.

  1. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.

Install Java

Java is recommended in general for opening files and for web conferencing/Collaborate sessions.

  1. Verify your version of Java
  2. Enable Java

Note: Other add-ons and plugins may conflict with Moodle ISU. It is important, especially when taking a quiz, that other plugins and add-ons are turned off.

Choose an Office Suite Program

In many courses you will be required to create documents and presentations.  Microsoft office is often required.  There are other options, although you will most likely need to always save your files in a Microsoft Office format (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx etc.)

  1. As a student, there are educational discounts.  The ISU Bookstore will have access to those discounts.
  1. Open Office Suite
  1. OpenOffice Suite Download
  1. OpenOffice can be used to create documents, powerpoints, and excel spreadsheets (doc., xls., ppt.) in lieu of Microsoft Office.
  2. Most instructors will ask you to save your files as.doc or .docx.
  1. Google Drive / Documents
  1. Google Drive / Documents are accessed through your ISU Gmail account.
  2. You can be used to create documents, powerpoints, and excel spreadsheets (doc., xls., ppt.) in lieu of Microsoft Office.
  3. Most instructors will ask you to save your files as .doc or .docx.
  4. Google Documents are generally not robust enough to format formal research papers.
  1. Microsoft Office Viewers
  1. Viewers allow you to open Microsoft Office files as read only.  You cannot create files using these free products.

  3. PowerPoint Viewer Download

Allow Pop-Ups from ISU Websites

You will need to allow pop-ups from ISU websites, including Moodle ISU.  To enable pop-ups from Moodle ISU in Firefox, see Web: Enabling Cookies and Pop-ups in Firefox.

Checking Your Version of Firefox

It is necessary to make sure your Firefox is up-to-date.

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Click the Firefox menu.

  1. Select the question mark icon in the lower right corner of the window to open the help menu.

  1. A new menu of options will appear.
  2. Select About Firefox.

  1. In the pop-up box, you will see the version of Firefox.

Note: You should always use an updated version of Firefox.

  1. If your version is current, you will see Firefox is up to date.
  2. If your version is not current, you will see a button to update your Firefox.
  1. Click the button to complete the update process.

Enable Java

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Click the Firefox menu.

  1. Select Add-ons. This will open a new tab in your browser with the Firefox Add-ons you have added.

  1. The Plugins section should be open.  
  2. If not, in the Navigation menu, Click Plugins.

  1. Scroll to find the Java Deployment Toolkit and the Java(TM) Platform.

  1. For both, Use the dropdown menu to select Ask to Activate.

  1. Close the Add-ons tab.
