General Software Requirements, Viewers and Plugins Moodle ISU


Introduction

This document will get you started with software requirements, accessing Moodle ISU, and correct settings of pop-up blockers.  For more information, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 282-HELP, or contact your instructor.

This guide will help you to understand:

Software and Browser Requirements

  1. Browser  Mozilla Firefox Download
  1. Firefox is a web browser created by Mozilla and is open source. This browser is recommended because it is most compatible with the settings in Moodle ISU.
  1. Video Players Adobe Flash Player Download
  1. The Adobe flash player is used to play flash video files on Moodle ISU.
  1. Other Plugins 
  1. Adobe Reader Download, Java Download

Note: Other add-ons and plugins may conflict with Moodle ISU. It is important, especially when taking a quiz, that other plugins and add-ons are turned off. Adobe Reader is used to open PDF files. Java is recommended in general for opening files and images.

Note: The following viewers are compliant with current browsers

  1. Microsoft Office Viewers:
  1. Word Viewer Download
  2. Excel Viewer Download
  3. PowerPoint Viewer Download
  1. Open Office Suite OpenOffice Suite Download
  1. OpenOffice can be used to create documents, powerpoints, and excel spreadsheets (doc., xls., ppt.) in lieu of Microsoft Office

Getting Started with Moodle ISU

It is recommended that students log on to Moodle ISU using the latest version of Firefox. If you already have Firefox installed, you can check to see if you have the latest version.

  1. To check, Open Firefox.
  2. Locate the Open menu and select the open help menu at the bottom.

  1. On the new menu, Select About Firefox.

  1. If you have the current version of Firefox, the pop-up box will show Firefox is up to date.

  1. If necessary, Install the latest updates.

To Install Firefox

  1. Open another browser (i.e. Netscape, Internet Explorer) and Go to mozilla.com.
  2. Click on the Download Firefox - Free link.
  3. Open the file and Install Firefox. Once installed, you should see a Firefox icon on the desktop.

Setting up the Pop-up Blocker

Firefox needs to accept pop-ups from Moodle ISU.  To enable pop-ups from Moodle ISU, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Locate the Firefox menu and Select Tools.
  3. Locate the Options tab.

Place a checkmark next to Block pop-up windows (if not already done).

  1. Click on the first Exceptions button.
  2. In the Address of website box, Type "*.isu.edu" (without the quotations) and Click on the Allow button.

  1. Click on the Close button.
  2. Click on the OK button.

Enable Javascript and Java

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Locate the Firefox menu and Select Tools.
  3. Locate the Add-ons tab.

  1. This will take you to a new page with your add-ons, Find Java.

  1. On the right hand side of each add-on you will see a drop down list. Select Ask to Activate.

  1. Perform these steps for both Java Deployment Toolkit and Java(TM) Platform.
