Harry Potter is Breaking The Records!
Harry Potter 7.2 has broken several records this weekend. It’s important to keep in mind that the elevated price for a 3D ticket is making it easier for new releases to shatter records. Potter’s numbers are really impressive though.
The current record holder for a three day weekend is Dark Knight at $158.4 Million. If the numbers continue to hold then Potter will topple that one by $10 million.
All told, Potter has toppled the records for best single-day box office, best Friday box office, best 3-day weekend, and best international opening weekend. It beat the previous international opening weekend holder, Pirates of the Carribean 4, by over $40 million. Which is huge because that’s the only record holder that it was going up against with 3D ticket sales.
In fact, the only record that Potter didn’t manage to topple this weekend is biggest Saturday; which is still in the hands of Spiderman 3.
Stevenson Cast in Gi-Joe
Ray Stevenson, who played Volstagg, one of the Warriors Three, in Thor has been cast as Firefly, a member of Cobra who is a saboteur, ninja master, and explosives expert.
In the comics Firefly is a mercenary trained by the Koga Ninja Clan. The first job that Cobra-Commander hires Firefly for is to kill Snake-Eyes.
It’s been said for a while that the storyline would revolve around Snake-Eyes. Last week it was revealed that the Producers were in talks with Dwayne Johnson to play Roadblock. The addition of Firefly is intriguing because he is typically linked to Snake-Eyes and there is a major storyline where Firefly is responsible for killing Roadblock’s girlfriend, Candy Appel, which leads to Roadblock discovering the Cobra headquarters, and getting captured, and tortured ...
Horrible Bosses Writers Tapped
Sony Pictures Animation is planning a sequel to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. The original grossed about $250 Million around the world. They just hired the writers of Horrbile Bosses to write the sequel.
The choice is a little odd. Horrible Bosses is an R-rated comedy that features Jennifer Aniston sexually harassing her employees.
The original was loosely based on a children’s book. Even though there’s a sequel to that book, the movie sequel is going to be based on an original idea.
Networks Going British?
Get ready to be disappointed this next TV season. Most TV shows are picked up for 22 episode seasons. This fall though, well, there’s a long list of new series’ that have been picked up for 13 episode seasons or less.
Terra Nova, Alcatraz, Smash and Awake are some of the shows that have been picked up for 13 episodes. GCB (Good Christian Belles) and Missing were picked up for 10 episodes. The River gets 8. Scandal has 7. Bent and Best Friends Forever are getting 6.
This is similar to the strategies that cable networks and some foreign production companies take when making new shows.
Here’s a series that’s only getting one episodes. Premiering Friday, July 22nd. I set the DVR this morning. LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace.
A routine Jedi Academy field trip is turned into a rip-roaring comic adventure in LEGO Star WarsTM: The Padawan MenaceTM. Tour guide Master Yoda leads a group of rambunctious Jedi younglings through Senate chambers when he senses a disturbance in the Force. Summoned to help save the Republic, he discovers that one of the younglings secretly boarded his ship…and has a taste for adventure! Meanwhile, C-3PO and R2-D2 are put in charge of the boisterous group and find themselves in over their heads. As the evil Sith prepare to wreak havoc, it’s up to Yoda and the droids to ensure that their young charges aren’t torn to bricks!
MTV’s Teen Wolf has been picked up for a second season. And, in keeping with the spirit of this segment, there are only 12 episodes.
Teen Wolf is the highest rated series on MTV for the last two years. It averages 1.7 Million viewers and is currently ranked 4th in it’s time slot.
Harry Lennix joins Man of Steel
Harry Lennix, who played Echoes handler Boyd Langton, who was later revealed to be the evil genius behind everything, on Dollhouse, has been cast to play Sgt. Stanwick in Man of Steel. In revealing how little the Hollywood Reporter understands about military ranks:
Like much of the plot detail of the new movie, Lennix’s character description is being kept shrouded in mystery, although is it known that he plays a high-ranking military officer named Sgt. Stanwick.
A Sergeant is neither an officer, nor is it a “high” rank.
Evil Dead Remake
In the most optimistically awesome news this week …
Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are teaming together to remake Evil Dead.
The original Evil Dead launched the careers of Sam Raimi and Bruce Cambell. It spawned two sequels and a musical.
No real details on Bruce Campbell’s association with the project. However, Raimi is going to pass the Directorial duties on to Fede Alvarez. We talked about Alvarez months ago. He created a short film called Panic Attack and released it on Youtube. The film attracted the attention of Raimi who has been looking for a suitable project for him since then.
Academy award winning writer Diablo Cody, she wrote Juno and Jennifer’s Body, is going to write the film.
Akira Back On
From the film project that just won’t die …
Warner Bros. is discussing making the project with Spanish director Jamue Collet-Serra. Collet-Serra previously made House of Wax, Orphan and Unknown. They are going to try to make it for only $90 million.
Spielberg is on his way to San Diego
Steven Spielberg is going to San Diego to try and drum up some excitement for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. Spielberg has never been to San Diego Comic-Con before. The news was broken by Geoff Boucher who will be moderating the Tintin panel. But it was also suspected because it had been announced that Spielberg was going to be receiving an Inkpot Award at Comic-Con.
John Carter of Nowhere
There’s now an official trailer for John Carter of Mars. This Disney film has officially dropped the of Mars part of the title and has put out a teaser that will completely confuse people into not going to see it.
