A.1. Agrobusiness (Industrial Crops)

AGR106: Ionizing System Treatment Plant for Export Vegetables

Amount:

US $ 9,083,000

State:

Profile

Location:

Municipality Comayagua, Department Comayagua

Description: Honduras's tropical climate allows year-round agricultural production, guarantees the growth of a number of products, among which is the production of jalapeño pepper, banana, watermelon, oriental vegetables and pineapple, among others. However, many of them cannot be exported fresh due to the phytosanitary restrictions in major markets, which make it impossible to take advantage of this demand. To overcome these phytosanitary restrictions a vegetable ionization treatment plant will be installed in Comayagua. The city of Comayagua is located 88 km from Tegucigalpa, and 158 miles from San Pedro Sula. Also, the location of Comayagua in the Inter-Oceanic Highway provides access to two international airports and is the point of convergence of the products from most of Central America. As this plant only at the Central American level, it opens the opportunity to offer treatment services at the regional level for all the fresh fruit that neighboring countries want to export. To start the operation of the plant, investors are offered to link the plant with planting if jalapeno pepper, of which there is already a success story of exportation of the product in the country, but it is sent processed. The fresh jalapeno pepper could be sent without any restrictions to the United States and Mexico, where the demand of these products is of 100 and 30 million pounds, respectively, leaving $ 30 million in currency a year.

State:

Profile

Location:

Municipality of Comayagua, Department of Comayagua

Description: Honduras currently exports in regional markets (El Salvador and Guatemala) about U.S. $ 27,000,000.00 per year of fresh tomatoes. A large fraction of this product is processed into paste and is exported to the United States, Mexico and throughout Central America, as there are restrictions on the export of tomatoes from open fields to these countries. The tomato market in the United States represents slightly more than 721 million dollars.

Evaluating, the high capacity and high demand for the product, the proposal is to install an industrialization plant for tomato purée with a processing capacity of at least 25,000 lb of product per hour, in an average shift of 8 hrs. work.

AGR111: IQF (Individual Quick Freezing) Fruits and Vegetables Production

Amount:

US$ 47,966,037

The requirement for the development of the project is 600 manzanas/ 1,000 producers, with production levels at the plant for the first year of 200,000 lbs per week and after 5 years of 400,000 lbs / week. The products selected for processing at the plant are a combination of: broccoli 30%, melon balls 30% , jalapeno 10%, cauliflower 8%, manioc: 5%, banana: 5%, okra: 3% and others: peas, plantain, mango, pineapple, papaya, citrics, etc.

There is potentially the opportunity to dedicate 5.000 hectare for planting corn seed, in association with medium-sized producers, to introduce technology production, or to offer a land lease system and so the investors can maintain their independence.

For this project, it is necessary to install a seed sorting and packing plant for export purposes, with a processing capacity of 20,000 MT per year.

AGR118: Pineapple Production and Packaging for Export

Amount:

US $ 23,959,172

State:

Profile

Location:

Municipality Danlí, Department El Paraíso and Municipality Siguatepeque, Department of  Comayagua

Description: The demand for fresh pineapples has enjoyed steady growth in recent years; the price has remained stable, with peaks during the spring season. The incentives offered by the Government of Honduras for export are always an advantage for the investor. In addition, in Honduras there is open sea to the west and east coasts of the United States, allowing a preferential export channel in Latin America. Opening doors to a market that consumes more than 320,000 metric tons of pineapples per year. In this sense the project is designed to establish a plantation of 52 hectares of pineapple, for the first year and consequently the expansion of production area by 52 hectares per year, reaching 300 ha after 5 years. In addition, it is necessary to install a packing plant with a packing line of at least 22,000 units a day and the processing line that will absorb 15% of the field's production, which is not suitable for export.

AGR119: Guava Production and Commercialization

Amount:

US $  6,840,233

State:

Profile

Location:

Municipality of Comayagua, Department Comayagua

Description: In Comayagua and its surroundings there are 80 hectares of Taiwanese Guava owned by a  guava producers' association in Comayagua. Approximately 200 MT of fresh fruit are produced and marketed locally. However, the true potential of the crop is in the regional export market in Central America, Mexico and the United States. There are phytosanitary barriers to export fresh plant, as for most of the fruits. They can only enter in a processed form or by ionization system, which does not yet exist at the regional level. This condition is what has not allowed the growth of Taiwan Guava in Honduras.

That's why the intention is to install the fruit processing plant, to begin processing discarded guava for local markets, and to promote the increase of the guava production area which will allow supplying the market with processed fruit. The plant can provide packaging service for other export fruits in the area, such as mango, pineapple, melon and oriental vegetables.

Description: At the regional level onion imports in 2008 were 68.000 TM, the main potential market is El Salvador with a consumption of 44%. However, it is important to note that the demand for each country is different with respect to varieties that consumers prefer, for example, El Salvador consumes mostly white onion, and nonetheless Honduras prefers the yellow variety.

Therefore it is proposed to venture into an onion production area of 1000 hectares, to supply the regional market with 45,000 MT, especially El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala (all of which are onion importers). The construction of the necessary infrastructure to dry, store, handle and package the product is an integral part of the project.
