LAC – Laboratório de Actividades Criativas
LAGOS OLD PRISON
From May and until June 2011, LAC will develop in Lagos, the first edition of ARTUR – United Artists in Residence, curated by Sofia Fortunato.
ARTUR is a unique project in Algarve, which involves some of the biggest names of the current global scene of Street Art. The exhibition will consist of an artistic residency at the old prison in Lagos, of seven international, national and local artists: Alexandros Vasmoulakis from Greece, SAM3 from Spain, António Bokel from Brasil, and Portugal will be represented by António Farto aka Vhils, and Jucapinga, both currently living in London, and Miguel Januário and Jorge Pereira.
The purpose of ARTUR is to create synergies of decentralization between talent and artistic participation, in order to stimulate and add value to the cultural tourism of Lagos.
During the 20 days of residency, the artists will have total freedom to create their work, where, besides the transfer of individual cells, all the collective space, inside and outside, of the old prison of Lagos, will be available to any intervention, adaptation and artistic creation.
The opening of the exhibition on June 18 and the launch of the catalog ARTUR´11 mark the beginning and the end of the whole creative process, developed by the artists and shared by the public.

LAC – Laboratório de Actividades Criativas (Creative Activities Lab) is a nonprofit Cultural Association formed in 1995 and headquartered in the old prison’s building of Lagos. An architectural construction, whose foundations are built on an ancient convent, is a place of history itself and also a big part of the history of the city. This building, made for other purposes, reveals now an interesting dichotomy of prison/reclusion VS creativity/freedom. Becoming a space for creation it rolled back its existence patterns. Now, the cells are studios for artists whose life in there and work contributed to the revitalization of the building, giving it a whole new history. The Association is a space for artistic residency for 13 years now and its priority is to develop and expand PRALAC – Artistic Residency Program for LAC, aiming to stimulate and promote artistic creation in the region, especially in the Southwest area of Algarve.
