What is CollazoProjects?

CollazoProjects has been the online home of Julie Schwietert Collazo and Francisco Collazo since 2008. A former psychotherapist and counselor turned professional travelers and expats, we turned our gift for eliciting and listening to other people’s stories into new careers: those of writer and photographer.

On CollazoProjects, we share stories and photos from a big, beautiful world. Though our special interest is in Latin America, the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, Spain, and our home base, New York City, we’re interested in the whole wide world, and pride ourselves on being able to find and share the overlooked stories about people, places, and experiences that other people tend to miss.

You can find more of those stories elsewhere online and in good old-fashioned print magazines. Our work has been published in: BBC/Lonely Planet, Budget Travel, Centro y Sur, DISCOVER, Fodor’s Travel Guides (Puerto Rico; Caribbean), FOX News Latino, Latina, Ms. Magazine, National Geographic Traveler, Outside, Scientific American, TIME, and the in-flight magazines of Aer Lingus, Delta, Martinair, and Singapore Airlines, among others. We’ve also produced apps and other multimedia content. Our complete and current list of publication credits are on our website.

Our goal on CollazoProjects is to inform and inspire readers about people, places, and experiences so they can go out and listen to others’ stories... and create their own!

What other experience and skills do we have?

-App development

We created the “San Juan Insider” app, available through iTunes, and have two other destination-based apps in progress.

-Consulting for tourism boards and destination marketing organizations

Julie has worked as an editorial and social media consultant for several tourism boards and destination marketing organizations, including Belize and Suriname.

-Positioning and promoting online content effectively

As managing editor, Julie led MatadorNetwork, the world’s largest online travel magazine, to become a two-time, consecutive winner of the Society of American Travel Writers Lowell Thomas Award, “the Pulitzer of travel writing.” She was also lead faculty for Matador’s online travel writing and new media school, MatadorU, which received a special commendation from the SATW judges during her tenure.
