- Small Group: Children will sort attribute and pattern blocks by shape.  Then have them form a red-yellow pattern.

- Whole Group: Display pattern rule on the board and have volunteers circle the rule and extend the pattern.

Children will continue the sequence of adding and subtraction as a joining and separating action.

Children will use pennies to add and subtract.

- Observe if children can show the sequence of adding and subtracting.

- Results of activities.

Whole Group: Write addition and subtraction facts on the board and tell a number story. Have volunteers relate the joining and separating action to the correct addition and subtraction sentence and tell how many in all and how many are left.

- Independent Practice: Use pennies to complete addition and subtraction sentences.
