Description
You are to create a radio commercial for a feature film. You’ll need to tell the story, act the characters, add the sound effects, and give the MPAA rating in no more than 60 seconds and no less than 30.
But there’s a twist. You can’t say the name of the movie.
Instructions
You can select whatever film you wish, but since I want people to have a decent shot at guessing what it is by the end of the commercial, please choose something at least well-known, if not mainstream.
You’ll work in teams of 3.
Since this all has to be done with audio –no visuals– you’ll be using the Garageband application from Apple. It includes easy editing, lots of sound effects, and everything else you need to paint a picture in sounds. There are tutorials available inside Garageband (yes, I checked them before class) as well as a PDF online for you to consult.
The tutorial Creating a Podcast should get you started, and this PDF, Chapters 7 and 8, give you all you need.
You’ll need to draft your own script summarizing the movie - I don’t need to see anything formal, but you should know what you’re going to say when you’re being recorded. Attention to detail and great care here will make the recording process go smoothly.
Criterion
- Your final product must start out with the MPAA rating:
“The following film is rated G for all audiences...”
or
“The following film is rated PG 13, or NC-17”...etc as appropriate
- Your final audio product must feature appropriate sounds, dialogue, and music to communicate the film you’re advertising.
- Do NOT mention the name of the film. You should end your spot just as you’re about to say the film title.
- At least 2 characters - major or minor, so long as you record at least two different people
- At least 4 sound effects - crashes, bells, alien invasion, traffic, crowds, airplanes, zombie breakfast...whatever is appropriate
- Music intro to set the tone
