 The children will add objects to solve a problem.

The children will solve story problems using

 beans.

  1.  The teacher will read “Jack and the Beanstalk.”
  2. Review Story elements.
  3. Present a story problem related to “Jack and the Beanstalk.” For example: A man gave Jack four beans for the cow. Then he gave Jack one more bean. How many beans did the man give Jack in all?
  4. Have the children talk about the different ways to solve the problem, for example, by using beans to count out how many or by counting on their fingers, or drawing pictures to help them find the answer.
  5. Distribute 6 beans to each child.
  6. The teacher will tell a story problem: a man gave Jack two beans. He gave Jack three more. How many beans does Jack have altogether?Have the children put the two groups of beans together to solve the problem.
  7. Have the children solve the problem.
  8. Repeat, changing the story problem to reflect other  addition facts with sums up to 6.

 The children will solve story problems using buttons.

  1. The teacher will hold up her arms out  at the sides to form a plus sign with her bodies.
  2. Have the children imitate the actions.
  3. Then write the plus sign on the board and explain that it shows us when to add.
  4. The teacher will briefly recount the story of Cinderella.
  5. Have the children answer the following questions: What kind of person was Cinderella? What kind of house work did Cinderella do? Who made Cinderella  work so hard?
  6. The teacher will present a story problem, such as the stepmother told Cinderella to wash her dress. The step sister gave Cinderella two more . How many dresses does Cinderella need to wash in all?
  7. Ask the children to pick out the numbers from the problem, then write 1+2=3 on the board. Explain that the plus sign comes between the two numbers to show you add them together.
  8. Ask a volunteer to show how many dresses are there altogether.
  9. Repeat, changing the story problem to reflect other addition facts with sums to 6 using buttons.
  10. Have the children tell the addition story.

  2. Distribute  problem 1 and 2 from activity p. I7 to each child.
  3. Have the children put a finger on the blue triangle.
  4. The teacher will read aloud addition sentence, having children point to each picture: One plus four equals five.
  5. Have the children trace 5 to show the sum.
  6. Help the children complete each exercise by adding the numbers and writing the sum.

  3. For exercise1, the teacher will help the children see that they are adding a group of four to zero, so they still have four.
  4. Have the children trace the 4 to show the sum.
  5. Help the children complete the page by adding and writing the sum.
