Either the student did not write at all, the writing is totally illegible, or the writing is totally off the topic.

Little, if any, development of support and/or organizational patter is apparent. Limited or inappropriate vocabulary frequently obscures meaning. Gross errors in the sentence structure and usage may impede communication. Frequent and blatant errors may occur in the basic conventions of mechanics and usage, and commonly used words are misspelled.
The writing is related to the topic but offers little support. Little evidence of an organizational pattern may be demonstrated. Development of details may be erratic, inadequate, or illogical. Vocabulary is limited, inappropriate, or vague. Gross errors in sentence and structure may occur. Errors in basic conventions of mechanics and usage may occur and commonly use words may be misspelled.
