Checklist of Dakin Publishing Company Fire Insurance Maps

by

Philip Hoehn

The Dakin Publishing Company of San Francisco, California issued a variety of maps from 1885 to about 1912.  It was founded by Edward A. Dakin (1847-1925).  Among its works were large-scale maps showing building footprints and construction details.  Known as fire insurance maps, these were issued to help insurance underwriters determine risks.  Published in small numbers, it is suspected that most Dakin fire insurance maps have been lost over the years, some perishing in the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906.  The following is a listing of those that have survived or are known to have been published.
