Recognizing Common Sight Words

 

 

 Ohio Content Standards Lesson:

 

 English Language Arts - Reading: Acquisition of Vocabulary. Indicator 4. Recognize common sight

words.

 

 

 

Learning targets:

 

1.         I can recognize common sight words to help me read a new story.

2.        I can recognize common sight words in my environment and community to help me read new signs and objects.

 

 

 

 

Learning Task:

1.         Visit the story  Zac the Rat  at starfall.com by clicking here. 

 

2.        Listen to the story from the website, and complete the learning game.

 

Practice and Application:

 

Find words around your house, from a cereal box or other house hold items. Write down a sight word you can read on a piece of paper. Draw a picture of the item in which you found the word you know. Sorting and Identifying

Learning Targets

Learning Task

1. Visit the Nina Loves to Name Things website by clicking here.

 

2. Click on one of the buildings to visit and follow the directions.  Put the objects in the correct box.  After sorting the objects in one building, choose at least 2 other buildings to visit and sort objects.

 

Practice & Application

3.Look around your room at home. What are some things that you have had to sort in your room?  On a piece of paper, make a list, or draw a picture of as many things you can think of that you needed to sort in your room at home.  Example: In my room at home I put all of my socks in a sock drawer.  I put all of my lipstick together in a special container.  This is an example of sorting.

Phonemic Awareness and Word Recognition

 

 

Ohio Content Standards

·         English Language Arts - Reading: Phonemic Awareness, Word Recognition and Fluency.

·         Indicator 3. Demonstrate an understanding of letter-sound correspondence by saying the sounds from all letters and from a variety of letter patterns, such as consonant blends and long-and short-vowel patterns, and by matching sounds to the corresponding letters.

 

Learning Targets

1.      I can say the letter and matching sound for each letter in the alphabet.

2.      I can blend letters together for consonant blends and vowel patterns.

Learning Task

1.      Visit the starfall.com ABC page, by clicking here.

2.      Practice clicking on each letter and listen to sounds of each letter on website.

3.      Choose 1 of your favorite letters and complete the game/activity for it.

 

Practice Application:

Find 2 things in your house that start with the same letter sound. Draw a picture to bring to class tomorrow to share, (if the items are not too big, you may bring the items to class to show us).

·         Mathematics: Number, Number Sense and Operations. Indicator 4. Count forward to 100, count backwards from 100, and count forward or backward starting at any number between 1 and 100.

 

 

Learning Targets

1.      I can count forward from 1-100.

 

Learning Task

1.    Visit Starfall.com number math page by clicking  here.

2.   Sing the number math song, 5 little bears.

3.   Play the math game 0 and 100.

 

Practice Application:

1.     Practice counting out loud to yourself 3 times. How high did you get?

2.     Find an adult or older sibling at home. Count as high as you can for them.

3.     Write down how high you counted on a piece of paper. Come to school and count for Mrs. Yu tomorrow to share what you practiced!

1.    Visit pbskids and play Curious george’s shape game by clicking here

2.   Pick one other Curious George shape game and play.

 

3.     Practice Application:

 

1.    Walk around your house, find household items that are shapes around your home. (Hint, What shape is your TV?)

2.   Draw a picture of 3 different shapes you see around your house. Bring your pictures to school to share with Mrs. Yu.

1.    Visit pbskids and play Curious George’s Count your Chickens’ game by clicking here  

2.   Pick one other Curious George counting game and play.

 

Practice Application:

1.      Find toys in your room.

2.      Line up your toys and count them by using the words, First, Second third.etc.

3.      Draw a picture of your toys in a line. Bring your drawing to school the next day.
