So, What Determines Your Blood Type?
Now, we are going to study traits that can be determined by THREE possible alleles, our BLOOD TYPE! Remember though, there are three possible alleles but you can only inherit two!
Allele | Phenotype | Genotype |
IA | A | IA IA or IA i |
IB | B | IBIB or IBi |
i | O | ii |
IAIB | AB | IAIB |
A & B - BOTH Dominant (I)
O - Recessive (i)
| Remember, the O allele does not produce any protein on the outside of the red blood cell so if the IA or IB allele is present, that is the protein that will be on the outside of the blood cell. |
Punnett Square Problems Using Blood Types
- If the father has the genotype IAi and the mother has the genotype IAIB use a punnett square to determine all the possible genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring.
- What percentage of the offspring will be heterozygous?
- What is the expected ratio of phenotypes?
- If two parents mate and one parent has the genotype ii and the other parent has the genotype IAIB, use a punnett square to determine all the possible genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring.
- What percentage of the offspring will be homozygous?
- What percentage of the offspring will have the genotype IAi?
- Two parents mated and half of their offspring had the genotype IBi and the other half had the genotype ii. What were the genotypes of the parents?
(Hint: Work backwards by filling in a punnett square)
- What are the genotypes of the parents?
- What percentage of the offspring are heterozygous?
- What percentage of the offspring are homozygous?
- What alleles are present between the two parents?
I NEED YOUR HELP TO SOLVE THIS.....
Some facts to help you solve the mystery:
- A body was found at a crime scene and there were two different blood types present!
- The genotype of the victim’s blood was found to be ii
- At the crime scene, another blood types was found as well. However, there wasn’t enough blood to figure out its phenotype. Forensic scientists did find out that the possible murderer had the A protein covering his or her red blood cells!
- There are three possible suspects:
Marc with the genotype: IAIB | Maria with the genotype: IBi | Melissa with the genotype: IAi |
Your task:
- Narrow down the possible suspects
- Explain why you chose who you did
- Explain why those are the possible suspects using evidence from the video and/or the reading above
