UBC EngPhys ProjectLab - proposal and final reports  - best / favorite random sentences

These are actual statements made in material submitted for marks to the UBC Engineering Physics Project Lab.

The majority of these sentences were likely a result of poor editing combined with a lack of sleep prior to submitting documents.   Some are only amusing when taken out of context (which, when placed in this short collection, is certainly the case).

Arranged reverse-chronologically.  Compiled by Jon Nakane

Fall 2017 - ENPH 459/479 Proposals

Essentially, the brain is not a spherical conductor   (NB - this comes from a project sponsor writeup)

Another issue is that skin features are more subtle and less standardized than hospital

floor tiling.

We do not hope to reinvent the wheel.

Any ideas and revelations we have during the previous months will also be tested here.

Fall 2016- ENPH 459/479 propsals

As long as humans have been on this Earth making messes, it has been necessary to

find better and faster ways to clean up.

Since we have no access to human tissue, we will simulate it with other materials

Fall 2015 - ENPH 459/479 proposals

All damage that could potentially be inflicted will be to the project itself as opposed to any of the team members.

One of the major aspects of this project is to drop a near human-sized rig of metal and circuitry

from a standing height onto a floor. This comes with risks to us, as well as to the equipment

The requirement for the US [ultrasound] probe holder to be mounted to the patient is because the patient is the most stationary object relative to itself

My partner and I Live together so hopefully communication won’t be difficult between us.

Oct 2013 - ENPH 479 proposals.

Project Objective:   Physical Limitation - Needs to exist in the physical world.

October/Nov 2012 -  ENPH 459 proposals.

However the challenges we are facing have been loved before, just not in this application.

Limbless locomotion is an area of study that fascinates many people.

September 2012 -  ENPH 479 proposals.

It is desirable to study the behaviour of wild beavers underwater.

A lot of hobbyists have difficulty reliably controlling laser firing.

Fall 2011 - Proposals, ENPH 479

Testing the strength of  the firing mechanism is also tested.  If proven weak meaning it cannot fire the projectile a distance of 60cm with adequate force on a human hand as judged by XXXX’s personal feeling of what an adequate force is, an alternative design must be considered.

Regular group meetings including will occur either over Skype or physically at a location of convenience (Engineering Physics Project Lab or Renfrew/12th Ave McDonald’s)

Note that there is no physical connection between the input waveguide and the resonant ring. The electromagnetic wave crosses the barrier by means of the effervescent wave.

A verification procedure will be hard to implement rigorously since any verification will actually be our results.

Higher output impedance is proportional to less electrical damping of the headphones. A common result is bass becoming “phat”, meaning “boomy”, “muddy”, or “uncontrolled”

Disputes between group members should be addressed immediately through face-face communication.  Most commonly these disputes involve members not completing tasks on time or group member hostility.

January 2011 - APSC 479 final report quotations.

To reduce experimental uncertainty, the experiment was modified to remove variables.

Ideally an infinite number of infinitely thin blades would be used, but would also require exotic materials and an elaborate construction process

November/December 2009 - APSC 459 Proposals

Bernhard has also built an electric violin before; therefore, he also makes a very good resource in terms of technical inquiries.

One component we are considering using for the center is a spherical square

April 2009 -  Final Reports

Options for controller design include the following methods which do not require vigorous astronomical calculations:

Although as always, mistakes were made, but in our case most all were easily recovered from or simply accepted.

... Despite this, the overall performance of the device is beyond suitable.

However, our project is merely at the footsteps of this mountain of achievements waiting to happen.

The project objectives approximate a reasonable state that will be worked towards.

October-December 2008

The PIC microcontroller contains a 10 bit internal ADC which can be connected to the multiplexer. The resolution is ample since it only needs to differentiate between petting and spanking.      (editors note:  this project was in support of touch-sensitive research and haptic creatures at UBC)

The motion is then conducted to the brush head for plague removal purposes.

The project objectives will allow limited function of the overall goal that this project would be continued towards.

Spring 2008  -  APSC 459 Final Reports

In  addition, it seems inconvenient at best to wear an array of electrodes on the tongue, this method likely has a very long learning curve for the users

The authors did not put in the above table the result from choosing different test objects such as large steel sheet metal, wire-stripper, and oven door since their results were worse than the wrench

In short, using ZigBit modules for this project is like using a bulldozer to dig a hole when only a shovel is needed. The bulldozer, once over the steep learning curve and expensive startup costs, will by far be more efficient and powerful. However, if all that is needed is to dig a 1 m diameter hole, then, though a shovel may be difficult to work with, it will get the job done much sooner and with less costs. For further development of this project, the authors recommend using a nice power shovel for the wireless network module.

We were however, unable to gather any meaningful data sets, because of the

difficulty in preparing samples of that size and time constraints.   In the end the system was tested by imaging a small solid object, namely a decorative plastic toothpick in the shape of sword. This sample is shown in figure 18.

Three features of the proposed device will have to respect forms of standards, although not necessarily legal ones.

This shows that in four directions the velocity of the robot is maximized. Thus, it is recommended that the robot moves in these four directions at all times.

Further discrepancy results primarily from ambient noise or from infidelity of the apparatus to the model.

Ideally this retrofitting would be performed on a running engine.

To fabricate the PCB board, the schematic diagram was drawn by eagle and was

then converted to board layout automatically.

Quotations up to October 2007

The shape of the optical board that was designed was similar to that of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars but more rectangular.

To prepared dip coated samples a piece of the cleaned substrate was gripped on the edge by a pair of tweezers and slowly immersed into a vile of quantum dots

In hope to limit tuning after implantation, will aim to complete most of the tuning using water phantoms, meat squares, and rat cadavers.

The jars housing the the dosimeter material were not designed or chosen by the authors ..... They are made from polyethylene teraphalate (PETE), and possess a somewhat disturbing resemblance to peanut butter jars.

[Student Name] has some knowledge in electrical, software development as well as geometry.

The unique skills that [student name] provides are both technical and soft in nature.

[Student Name] was assigned as the editorial manager due to his thoroughly document activities.

(under work plan assignments) - All members are also responsible to researching, writhing, and editing.

The endurance test mainly consists of running the robot for as long as the battery allows and abusing the physical structure to ensure the integrity of the robot.

The range test will involve one person walking around with a laptop connected to an XBee module and doing the ?Can you hear me now? Good? thing from the Verizon commercials (this commercial can be found on Youtube)

When the Arduino is not taking measurements it checks for data in the serial input buffer. It compares anything it finds with the three characters ?hi!?.

By further examining the results above, we can see that there appears to be a sweat spot for each method, and the location ... of the sweat spot varies method by method.

In order to have robots automatically go ...., a sensor unit and a brain are required.

In going over the program during the winter break (after a good rest) the author came to the conclusion that the very same author was not in full possession of his abilities when he did the work during the year.

A little more clearly, windshield wipers are designed and selected to actuate the motion of windshield wipers not full size human beings.
