Science Leadership Academy students have been working with the Leah Stein Dance Company to create a collection of alternative performance pieces as part of the Art in the Open festival along the Schuylkill River. All the performances were created on location interacting directly with the site as inspiration. As you watch the dances, notice the ways sound, movement and place interact. Each piece is the product of extensive observation, experimentation, and collaboration. Allow yourself to take in the full range of possibilities and inspirations the students present in these pieces. We hope these performances inspire new ways to see and experience this part of the city.

“Unusual movement in a public place will capture your eye, call your attention to the present, and expand your awareness of your surroundings…Site-specific refers to the fact that these dances take a particular place as both the inspiration and setting for the dance.”

between Walnut Streets and Race Streets.***

Performance Sites listed in order from North to South:

1) Open plaza south of Race Street, north of JFK Blvd

2) Grove of trees between plaza and train bridge

3) Under train bridge north of JFK Blvd

4) Stairs leading up to JFK Blvd

5) Benches north of Market Street

6) Pillars between Market and Chestnut

7) Large boulders south of Chestnut

8) Under Walnut St bridge, along the river
