Meeting 7: March 22, 2011

I. Announcements

        A.)Earth week is not only 4 Weeks Away!

                i.) Contact Jessica at csulbesp@gmail.com for ideas!

                ii.) If you would like to table at the Earth week fair let us know!

        B.) American Institute of Chemical Engineering Conference April 1st:

i.) Alternative energy to power cars

ii.) Open to all students: registration $40 in advance $50 at the door                                 (includes breakfast, lunch and dinner).

iii.) British Petroleum will be speaking

        D.) No Club Meeting next Week! Have an awesome spring Break!

        E.) Keep in mind: 1st Saturday of April the Los Cerritos Wetlands Restoration will take place

II. Groups

        A.) Plastic Bag Ban

                i.) still getting signatures (have collected roughly 50+... Great job Guys!)

        B.)Plastic Water Bottle Ban

                i.) Distribute water bottle surveys

                ii.) Petition is ready, working on getting signatures

                iii)Need to work on a letter to the ASI president and also find when they meet to                         join in on the next meeting

                iv.) For earth week: Water bottle pyramid, “Pepsi” challenge for water, make a                         poster board, get signatures at table etc (for the fair)

        C.) Urban Farm

                i.) Working on setting  up a meeting with president Alexander

Meeting 6: March 15, 2011

I. Announcements

        A.)Earth week is not only 4 Weeks Away!

B.) Beach Clean up this Saturday March 19th 10am-12pm at the Belmont Pier. Come join                 us! Bring a water bottle, close toed shoes and a friend! Gloves and trash bags will be                         provided.

II.  Action Groups

        A.)Plastic Bag Ban: Have set up a petition and have been collecting signatures of support

        B.) Plastic Water Bottle Ban  

i.)Design class was assigned a project to create/design a filtration station (so, we                 don’t have to work on the design of a filtration station)

ii.)Broad of trustees meet every month (open to the public)..We want to find out                 their next meeting to attend

iii.) created a “Water Bottle Survey” to distribute via email.

C.)  Urban Farm Update

                i.) Long Beach organics-unpaid internship (ideas?)

                ii.) Getting Urban farm started (need a design to present to the president)

                iii.) Joe’s thoughts on the LA-4 location: Thought it was a good idea, good pot. Just                         worried about construction business and who’s going to maintain the garden during                         the summer (possible internship position)

                iv.) Need to set up an appointment with the president

Meeting 5: March 8, 2011

I. Announcements

A.) Earth Week is 5 Weeks away!

        i.) Contact Jessica at  csulbesp@gmail.com if you have ideas/ would like to have a                 particular organization table at the fair

B.) No event this weekend, but heads up for our Beach Clean-Up March 19t at Belmont Pier (shoot us an email at csulbesp@gmail.com if you would like to carpool)

II. Guest Speaker- Joe Corso from Long Beach Organics, Inc.

        i.)Long Beach Organics is a local non-profit dedicated to creating and maintaining                         community gardens in Long Beach.  

ii.) With their help, it will be VERY difficult for President Alexander to say no to the Urban Farm project.  

III. Discussion

        i.)Interns for Long Beach Organics, Inc- needed (if you have ideas on what type of                         internship you think will be beneficial shoot us an email and we will bring it to Joe’s                         attention)

                a.) Internships will be unpaid but will offer great opportunities for management

                b.) Possible ideas for interning with LBO: assistance in managing gardens, data                         entry, social networking, etc. (job description not set yet)

        ii.)Checked out location for Urban Farm by LA-4

        iii.)Community Garden by Japanese garden..??

I. Announcements

A.) Wetlands Clean-Up at Los Cerritos Wetlands Saturday March 5th from 10:30am- 12:30pm (Studebaker and 2nd St) - CHANCE TO WIN PRIZES!

B.) PowerShift 2011: Interested in going to Washington D.C. to train yourself to become a key environmental movements? If interested, contact Nicole Bullum at csulbesp@gmail.com. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of!!

II. Update on Groups

        A.) CSULB Plastic Water Bottle Ban

                i.) talked to ASI president- already proposed just need a push/ show support

                ii.) Letter of support for faculty, club support and student body (get signatures)  

        B.) Long Beach Plastic Bag Ban

                i.) Talk to stores/ restaurants on campus

                ii.) Educate and get signatures for support

                i.) Took field trip to check out land by LA-4

I. Welcome/Mission Statement

A.) To Spread Environmental Awareness, give students an opportunity to positively contribute to the environment, and encourage others to build a more sustainable world.

II. Announcements

        A.) Green Campus: Looking for a new intern to hire! (preferably one that will still be in                 school for at least one more year)

B.) Beach Clean-Up will be every 1st Saturday

C.)wetland restorations will be every 3rd Saturday

III. Updates on Earth Week!

        A.) Earth week Fair is Tuesday (April 19th) and Wednesday (April 20th)

        B.)  Movie screening outside on lawn (projector)

        C.) Relay for prizes

        D.) Garage Sale  Saturday before (April 16th)

        E.) Beach Clean-Up that Friday (April 22nd)

        F.) Possible Sustainability Class by the Green Campus Program

G.) Possible Guest Speakers

H.) Group ideas- let us know if there is a vendor/group you think should be invited to help                 along with our group efforts (to table during the Earth Week fair)

A.) CSULB Plastic Water Bottle Ban

                i.) President Alexander wants plastic water bottles out!  We just need to find a way                         to keep the 49er shops happy

                ii.) Allie B. already has a drinking foundation map of USU (which may be the best                         spot to         have the first hydration station)

iii.) Already hydration Stations to choose from

B.) Long Beach Plastic Bag Ban

        i.) Want to create a street team to create awareness and educate the public- focus                 mainly on students right now and campus stores and then in future branch out to                 the community.

C.) Urban Farm

        i.) contact past members involved to see what steps need to be taken

        ii.) come up with a design to please president

        iii.) Who’s going to take care of the farm? what about in the summer?

III. Plan for this Semester

        A.) Continuing on the Urban Farm Demonstration since Paul Wingco has encouraged us to do         so.

B.)   Show our support to the LB Plastic Bag Ban

C.) Sustainability Task Force: focused on sustainable projects, if you have any ideas/are                 interested in getting involved email the club for more information.

IV.  Brainstorm Goals (what we came up with)

        A.) Ban the sale of all plastic water bottles on campus:  

                i.) beginning with the ban of the beach water bottle. re-due drinking fountains,                         water filter station/hydration station, could sell reusable water bottles, educate                         the public on where we get our water, etc.

        B.) Urban Farm

Will be working with these two idea this semester to really make a difference.

Meeting 4: October 6, 2010

I. Upcoming Events

A.) Saturday October 9th: Beach Clean-up @ Belmont pier 10am-noon

B.) Saturday October 10th: 350 Day (For more information click here and search Long beach for local events)

C.) Saturday October 16th: Tree Law Workshop at Loyola Law School 8:30am-5pm

II. ECO Week

A.) Starts Tuesday October 26th (Keep an eye out for career panels, movie screenings and a fair on the friendship walk (Fair on Wednesday and Thursday of that week), etc.

III. Membership

        A.) Although not a mandatory fee (meaning you can still come and participate in events/meetings) we would appreciate your membership to help out on events and provide you guys with snacks/drinks etc. Fee is $10

        B.)T-Shirts: $12 or $10 if you get a shirt and pay the membership fee. You should buy a         t-shirt and support our club. It would be greatly appreciated!

I. Upcoming Events

        A.) Friday October 1st: 5th Annual Compassionate Cuisine from 7pm-11pm on Campus at         the Japanese Garden. $35 in advance and $45 at the door.

        B.) Friday October 1st: Friends of the Colorado Lagoon (FOCL) internship deadline!

        C.) Saturday October 2nd: Ballona Restoration Workshop 9am-1pm

        D.) Saturday October 2nd: Long Beach Green Port Festival 10-3pm

III. Simple Ways to save Energy

        For example: Turn off lights when you’re not in the room, switch out light bulbs to CFL’s or other energy efficient bulbs, weather stripping, ride your bike, walk, carpool, public transit,  if using a dishwasher make sure its full, unplug chargers when not in use, low flow shower heads or take shorter showers, low flow toilets,  etc.

I. Introduction of Committees

        A.) Urban Farm Demonstration on Upper Campus:  As of right now trying to provide a design that is aesthetically pleasing to present to President Alexander.  Contact Tiffany for more                 information.

B.)  Environmental Justice Committee: Trying to get involved with Clean Ports Act of 2010, coalition for clean and safe ports and  possible do a Harbor Ride along and/or Toxic tour.  Contact Jessica for more information.

C.) Environmental &Community Outreach Committee: Some Goals: To increase awareness,         share ideas for the 4 R’s (fourth being restore), leave no trace, etc.  Contact Allie or Patricia         for more information.  [Co-Chairs: Alli Goldman and Patricia Moran]
