Career Pathway Investigation Project

Objective: Using the information from the Self Assessments, Naviance, and other class activities you need to research, plan and write a formal written paper or a display and oral presentation from the project standards list on a pathway, career, and post-secondary option of interest to you.

Purpose: To familiarize ALL students with a broad range of career and post-secondary option possibilities and to practice research, communication, and presentation skills, essential to all careers.

Requirements To Be In The Paper, Display, and Oral Presentation

All of these questions need to be answered in each of the three presentations.

Career Cluster Research

        Identify the Pathway on the School to Career Wheel where your career interest area is located and describe the Pathway in a well-developed paragraph using the material provided in class to answer the following questions: Use the words “dinosaur” and “purple” in the essay.  

  1. Define the cluster.
  2. What are some of the varied careers found in the cluster?
  3. What kind of majors would you need to look into for college? And what could you take for a specialty class or organizations could you join in High School (Secondary) to prepare for this cluster?
  4. What personal characteristics are typical of people employed in this pathway?
  5. What is the employment trend for this pathway?

Specific Career Research

        Identify your specific career of interest and using information obtained from the self-assessments, Naviance, Occupational Outlook Handbook, job shadow, and class activities answer the following questions specific to your career:   Use the words “dinosaur” and “purple” in the essay.  

  1. Describe the specific career
  2. Salary Range – beginning through experienced
  3. Career Potential – supply, demand, and advancement opportunities
  4. Skills, Abilities, Aptitudes, Work Values, and Temperaments Needed
  5. Working Conditions – injury or illness risk, physical stamina, stress, repetitive tasks, indoors, outdoors, etc.
  6. Advantages and Disadvantages
  7. Incorporate your results from all the self-assessments to explain why this might be a good career choice for you.
  8. Indicate what you are currently doing or could be doing now to prepare for a career in this area.

Post-Secondary Option Research

        Identify a post-secondary option that has a major that could lead you to your specific career. Using the information obtained from Naviance, the Internet or other reference material in the Post Grad answer the following questions about the post-secondary option. Use the words “dinosaur” and “purple” in the essay.  

  1. Type of control (who controls it)
  2. Total enrollment
  3. Describe the characteristics of the student body
  4. Housing accommodations
  5. Campus activities/student organizations – focus on those of most interest to you and those related to your career interest area
  6. Campus-wide events
  7. Majors/programs offered that would lead to your career interest and any others of particular interest to you
  8. Admissions requirements, including average SAT or ACT score required for acceptance
  9. Cost, resident and non-resident tuition, other required fees, room, and board cost per year and explain your strategies for financing the cost.
  10. Interesting facts, stories or information about the school
  11. Explain, based on the information you have obtained and explained, why this would be a good post-secondary option for you.

Formal Written Paper Requirements – DUE ______________________________

        Information presented in the written format is used to prepare the display and oral presentations.

  1. All of the above questions are answered for all 3 sections (Career Pathway, Specific Career, and Post-Secondary Option).
  2. Reflects appropriate writing skills and will be graded using the 6 traits writing rubric.
  3. Contain an introduction and conclusion paragraphs.
  4. Word processed in size 12 font
  5. Double Spaced
  6. Minimum 3 FULL pages
  7. Has a title page or cover with the topic, presenters name, class, and date
  8. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation meet acceptable standards

Oral Presentation Requirements– DUE/STARTING ___________________

        Presented to the class, on a random selection basis!        

  1. All of the above questions are answered for all 3 sections (Career Pathway, Specific Career, and Post-Secondary Option).
  2. Reflects appropriate public speaking skills
  3. Involves the audience
  4. Entertaining
  5. Education
  6. Meets the time requirement (not less than 5 minutes nor more than 10)
  7. Create a Display  - (series of posters, PowerPoint, or other presentation tools (prezi)) to use as a visual aid in the oral presentation.
  1. All of the above questions are answered for all 3 sections (Career Pathway, Specific Career, and Post-Secondary Option).
  2. All written information must be computer generate (it may not be cut from existing printed material, ie. The Internet, or from your paper) in your own words, not copied from the source.
  3. Written material should be summarized from your paper, not duplicated from your paper.
  4. Must include some computer graphics related to the information provided.
  5. Must be neat and well proportioned
  6. Must reflect thorough planning and effort
  7. Must be colorful, eye-catching, and creative
  8. Must be securely and attractively assembled
