The MGSA is chartered to address the needs of both doctoral and master's students at Merrill College. Both groups are equally busy but the texture of their respective curricula makes it hard to overlap them for MGSA meetings and activities. The MGSA is discussing the challenge how to keep the two programs coordinated in our mutual interests while giving each group the slack to self-organize in the easiest way possible. We plan to address these issues and get the best ideas to work on the issue this fall.
A second struggle involves playtime. Our unofficial motto has us working hard and playing hard, too, but our attempt to find the right time and sometimes the right activities for free entertainment had a few successes but more misses. We had a decent turnout for the movie screening of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and a pre-Oscar showing of "The Social Network" but otherwise little attendance. We still think there is a place and time for entertainment that can bond a diverse group of students with diverse interests. We need your ideas how to make events worthwhile for you.
In 2012, the MGSA started to collect Merrill College graduate students' accomplishments to put on our website. It requires your participation to succeed, meaning you will have to fight off your natural humility, if only for a moment.
"The idea," said then MGSA doctoral co-president Stine Eckert, "is that we establish a current running account of what interesting things Merrill graduates do -- for PhD students this could be research projects, conference presentations and publications; for master's students journalism projects, scholarships, and interesting trips etc."
The MGSA will publish the information in alphabetical order on its website.
