 Use paper cup and string “telephone to explore how sound travels.

 Create a telephone out of paper cup and string to show how sound travels.

  1. Advance preparation: Assemble a string telephone for each pair of children.
  2.  Discus how the telephone helps us talk to those who are not close.
  3. Have the children identify where they listen to hear sound and where they speak to transmit sound by using a real telephone.
  4. Display Flip Chart page 59.
  5. Have the children identify the material.
  6. Ask a child demonstrate how the phone work.
  7. Ask: What do you predict you will hear if you hold the other cup to your ear while I am talking into my cup?
  8. Have the children check their predictions. Pair the children . Have them stand far enough apart so the string is pulled tight. Then listen as the other person talks.
  9. Have the children share their partner’s message.
  10. Have the children vary the volume of their voices.
  11. Have test how loudly they must whisper in order for their partner to hear the words. Then have pairs of children move close together.
  12. Have the children answer the following questions: What happens to your partner’s voice? How does the sound travels from one cup to another? What happens when the string is not pulled tightly? Why is it easier to hear a louder rather than a softer sound?
  13. Have the children children summarize by describing step-by-step how sound travels through a paper cup telephone from the speaker to the listener.Have the children repeat the experiment while grasping the taunt string stretch between the phones.
  1. Are you listening to hear sound or are you listening to transmit sounds?
  2. Why do we use telephones?
  3. What do you think will happen if you taunt the string stretch between the phone?
