Lighthouse Team

Present: Nancy Arledge, Terri Arredondo, Matt Ballentine, Amanda Mickey, Amanda Stewart, Marsha Storts-Wike, Toby Walls-Waller, Danni Williams

Absent: JR Coffland, Aaron Brown

1.           Conferences – The leadership notebooks are by no means a requirement for conferences this nine weeks.  There are some teachers who have data already collected and we could utilize those items that are already created and for those who wish to make the conferences “student –led” can feel free to do so.        Three teachers on the lighthouse team felt comfortable to “pilot” the program next week.  Terry Arredondo, Amanda Stewart, Danni Williams  will come back to the light house team with suggestions as to how we can create an environment for successful implementation of student led conferences for the entire building.  Amanda Mickey and Nancy Arledge will then try student led conferences in November.

a.   There was some discussion about the leadership groups that would be involved in the parent teacher conferences next week.

A question was raised about how we could facilitate having our leadership groups work at both the volleyball game and at parent teacher conferences next week on October 4th.         Some discussion was had about who is really leading the groups.  There were some who felt    that the leadership groups are being expected to do too much before we have had the opportunity to work through the details of what each group is responsible for.

• Each group should make their mission statements and “big rocks” a priority.
•  Some groups have these done depending on the number of students in the group.  
• Each group is different as far as how much planning that they have to do to get started.
• It was said that, “kids need to be responsible for designing what each group does and that   students need to take on the leadership roles within the group.”
• Teachers are not meant to run the groups but teachers can make suggestions as to what the groups can facilitate.

Some groups are more prepared to participate in events. It was decided that all groups will be offered the opportunity to participate in events (at the beginning stages of this implementation) but will each individual group will need to decide if they are prepared to help.

2.  We need to begin by getting the “Leadership Lounge” set up and ready to go.  Danni Williams will be in contact with Nancy Thornsberry to see if we can get a calendar printed from the poster maker.  We will need to get input from the student lighthouse team to get their input on the room.

a.   There was some discussion as to when the student lighthouse team will meet.  It was discussed that students could meet during the lunch/WOW time with the facilitator to complete their tasks.  Basically the student lighthouse team will meet from 10:25-11:25 with 7th and 8th grade students being excused from WOW during those days.  The teachers who are facilitating the lighthouse team will work their schedules in order to be present.   Matt Ballentine volunteered to help with the facilitation of the student lighthouse group with Nancy Arledge if it is necessary

3.  Amanda Mickey and Marsha Wike had spoken this morning and they both agree that we need to be careful not to push too hard and create frustration with this new paradigm shift.  It may take time but we would like to see it become “a way of life”.  In the process we can’t forget that it is necessary to be willing to “try things” and not be afraid of facing some failures.

a.  Terri Arredondo encouraged the lighthouse team to model the 7-habits for the students, staff and administration.  We can’t expect people to understand the 7-habits if we are not willing to model the behavior ourselves.

4.   Leadership day-  It was decided that we will leave the planning of Leadership Day up to the “Event Planning” committee.  Danni Williams will take this to the Event planning committee to spark some discussion as to what the students would like to see for that event.  The lighthouse may want to look into setting date (sometime in May?)

5.   WOW – The issue of giving up WOW was “tabled” until our next meeting in order to see how teachers are willing to utilize the WOW periods for Leader in Me.

6. Communication – In order to facilitate communications among the teachers, we will divide up and have personal buddies in order to share with them the information that is discussed at the lighthouse team meetings.
