Anglicanism

When did it diverge?

Anglicanism or Church of England had its beginnings during the English Reformation in 16th century England. This Reformation was aimed for a renewal of the church and separation from the principal Christian beliefs.

Why did it diverge?

King Henry VIII formalizes the separation of the Church of England from any association with the papal society. This meant that King Henry did not want to be led under the rule of the Pope. It was because Henry wanted a divorce and wanted to re-marry another lady but the pope refused of this because of the Catholic beliefs. Henry got enraged and told the Archbishop of Canterbury to allow this divorce. This event effectively lead to England breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church based in Rome. Henry placed himself as head of the church and in that sense, in his eyes, his divorce was perfectly legal.

Unique features Of Anglicism

-       The essential difference between Anglicans and Catholics. Catholics believe that the Pope is God's representative on earth, Anglicans believe that the King of England is.

-       King has the right to 'authorize' a Bible.

-       Catholics believe that the communion wafer after consecration becomes the Body of Christ; protestants believe that it remains bread; Anglicans believe that it is both the Body of Christ and bread (consubstantiation).

-       Catholics believe that the clergy should remain celibate. Anglicans accept a married clergy.

Catholics consider sacraments essential to salvation, Anglicans consider sacraments useful but not essential.
