At the age of 29, Dmitry is a five-year pro. The WBO’s number-two ranked contender at 160 pounds and a former amateur standout in Europe, he is making his U.S. debut in this fight.

Eastsideboxing.com reported [excerpts]: American fans will be pleased with Pirog. He is an action-intensive boxer with busy hands who rarely clinches. His style is an unusual blend of European technical boxing and classic American tactics, which emphasize aggression and effective upper body movement. He can defend without having to retreat or cover up. Pirog’s uncanny defensive instincts and his capacity to throw punches from unusual angles, in fact, have reminded some pundits of James Toney.     Dmitry told Boxingscene.com [excerpts]: I’m high on Danny Jacobs. I watched him a lot. People keep saying he is way too inexperienced to fight me for the title, but I don’t think so. Jacobs has tons of amateur experience, and he was an accomplished fighter at unpaid ranks. I feel his amateur background in his fights. He can do all types of work - he can bang and he ties you up, he can be a slugger, and he can be a spoiler if needed. He’s had somewhat soft opposition, but I think he is well-developed. That’ll be a hell of a fight. [End Boxingscene.com item]

Dmitry said through an interpreter, “I trained for this fight in Gelendzhik. My gym is named after me – it’s called ‘Gym of Dmitry Pirog.’ During my preparations for this fight, my sparring partners were boxers from Russia. I mix some styles in one fight, and try not to use the same style in different fights.”
