Remixed Schools

iT Summit 2011 - Michael Wesch - May 10th

- We are meaning-seekers - Students especially feel the need to have school and assignments to be relevant to life

- We need to go from knowledgeable to knowledge-able

- What are the implications of being globally connected when you don’t know who you are talking to?

- Your own self-concept and self-awareness changes with a web cam - psychology

--there is an anonymity of watching videos and commenting from behind a computer

- We want connections but feel constraints and responsibility with that

In a school, if the walls could speak, the walls would say...

- To learn is to aqcuire knowledge

--information is scarce

--we should trust authority for good information

------but these things are not exactly true in a digital world!

Transformations in Learning:

1. Receptive 2. Subjective 3. Procedural (separate vs. connected) 4. Constructive

---Technology alone is not the answer - we need to adapt HOW we teach

- Power point is ‘great’ for teachers, but bad for learners - we can’t just have students memorize anymore - this is why they all tune out

- Model learning by realizing you don’t have all the answers

Changes:

1. Find a real and relevant project (related to student interest)

2. Do the project as a community with your students (teach and learn yourself)

3. Then you add technology - the RIGHT technology - with student input
