The first decade of computer art (1965-1975) - Frank Dietrich

Leonardo. vola 19. no2   1986

[words that are new for me]

mathematics of aesthetics

generative aesthetics

artificial art

high-speed visual thinking --->computer art

algorism to generate aesthetics

[my understanding]

The paper gave me a great survey about the beginning of computer art which i did not have any knowledge of.

It is fascinating for me to understand the early computer art is mostly creative scientists testing visual art experiments by programming through mathematics methods and functions. That is as the term used-algorism to generate aesthetics .

Computer imagery: imitation and representation of realities

[ notes from the paper]

imitation

platonic idealism

the perfect idea ( truth and beatify) of an object through artist intuition

Dynamic symmetry examined mathematical constructs underlying greek aesthetics. the influence of theses theorists on later work in involving information science and cybernetics as related to aesthetics may not be readily evident ...

Aristotle . imitation of essences

not copies of nature but express the essence of the subject portrayed.

reality is seen as a set of conventions and constructs invented by humans or whether it exists independent of human understanding  ?

this paper posits that computer imagery is an excellent ground for contemporary multidisciplinary work that will include thoughtful analysis of form , content and practice.

these analyses are important to larger philosophical questions involving the nature of reality , human-reality relationship and roles of art and technology in representing these relationships

[my take]

It is very new for me understand computer imagery from philosophical analysts.

I am not sure the  author is precise enough of some of the vague words, such as in what content the computer imagery referring too. There are no in-depth examples and substances when a theory or a fact is mentioned. However, it is a really good read for me.

Balancing the expected and the surprising in geometric patterns

 [notes from the paper]

twentieth century art movement artist searching into scientific  method and inspirations   to create art works.

" the neurobiologist Zeki hold the view that" artist are neurologists, studying the brain with techniques that are uniques to them and reaching interesting but unspecified confusions about the organization of the brain ... "

The particular hypothesis that is experimentally

tested here concerns the ability of humans to detect an

underlying pattern, when a certain proportion of its elements

have been disturbed.

6. Hypothesis 2: Æsthetic Balance

The human understanding of “random” differs from the mathematical

 7. Hypothesis 3: Pattern Perception

The hypothesis is that humans can easily detect patterns

when less than 25% of the pattern is removed or

disturbed, whereas removal of over 50% of the pattern

destroys it.

[ my take]

I appreciate this research study of how human predict patterns objectively.

As when i am experimenting arrange of periodic functions for my curve rotation. I tend to believe that there are some value more pattern-like to others , and maybe there are certain values are more "correct" than others.

[ science and hypothesis] by Henri- Poricare

Fascinated by his writing of basic mathematic terminologies and methods. The part of magnitude --> continuum  magnitude -->mathematical dimensions --> geometry--> etc .

it is amazing for me as i did not know his theory well. However, it might be very common for others.

Time line

Next week one and two

clear research sentences.

filed { curve study ,

differentiate curves in programming visual environment

            treat curve equations as magnitude  and vectorize them  }

What is the scientific question i am asking?

When i know it, what i want others to know?

After next two weeks.

generate this question and let it drive into focused exploration and definition.

Which at this point i do not know what, therefore i do not know how to plan the time line from here.
