Certificate in Distance Education Leadership and E-learning

The certificate in distance education leadership and e-learning focuses on aspects related to management of distance education.  It provides a basic foundation in terms of theory and history of distance education, as well as the use of technology in distance education.  The fundamentals of online teaching and distance education leadership and management are also included.

Total Semester Hours: 12

Students must take the following courses:

Note: Students should take OMDE 601 before all the other courses. Students are recommended to take courses in the following order OMDE 601, OMDE 603, OMDE 610 and DEPM 604.


Certificate in Distance Education, Globalization, and Development

The certificate in distance education, globalization, and development examines how distance education has been used and the audiences it has reached. It allows students to explore organizational models for distance education at various educational levels and analyze the roles played by international agencies. The changing role of the private sector, the role of conventional universities in relation to e-learning and the new international players in a globalized environment are also discussed.

Total Semester Hours: 12

This certificate is recommended for students who have an intermediary experience with distance learning. If they do not have that level of experience, we recommend the student to take OMDE 603 as well.

Students must take the following courses:

Joint Certificate: E-Learning and Instructional Design

This joint certificate is being offered through UMUC and University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Courses combined from the two institutions lead to a certificate in E-Learning and Instructional Systems Design.*

This certificate provides knowledge and skills in the field of course design, development, and delivery at a distance, with a focus on e-learning. It addresses the need of e-learning professionals, who are engaged in online course development and delivery. Students will take four courses covering topics in the areas of training at a distance, the use of technology in distance education, and instructional design. UMUC brings its expertise in distance education and technology, while UMBC brings it expertise in instructional design and course development.

* Students wishing to earn the certificate must apply to either UMBC or UMUC for admission to the certificate program. Once admitted, students may take courses at the other institution as a visiting student. Courses from the other institution will be treated as transfer credit at their home institution, leading to the joint certificate.


Certificate in Foundations of Distance Education and E-learning

The certificate in foundations of distance education and e-learning is intended to represent the study of the four basic foundational aspects of the field of distance education: history and theory, media and technology, economics, and support of the student.

Certificate in Library and Intellectual Property in Distance Education and E-learning

The certificate in Library and Intellectual Property in Distance Education and E-learning will offer a solid foundation in distance education, distance education technology and the development and delivery of digital resources for distance education. Students will cover intellectual property issues affecting the use of copyrighted works in distance education, developing and delivering library resources online to a faculty and student population, and the future of digital information delivery and the impact of digital rights management (DRM) technologies and social networking.

Certificate in Policy and Management of Distance Education and E-learning

The certificate in policy and management of distance education and e-learning focuses on all aspects related to the management and policy definition within the distance education enterprise. It includes a systemic view of distance education, fundamentals of the economics of distance education, the diverse facets of business in distance education, quality assurance and control, and leadership in distance education.

Certificate in Teaching and Training at a Distance

The certificate in Teaching and Training at a Distance provides the students with foundations of online teaching and learning in a variety of settings, including higher education, corporate, government and not-for-profit training. It provides knowledge is areas of technology, instructional design, teaching and training methodologies appropriate for distance learning.

Total Semester Hours: 12

Note: This certificate is for students who have a basic knowledge of foundations in distance education and e-learning. If the student does not have this knowledge, we STRONGLY recommend the student take OMDE 601 prior to starting the certificate.

Students must take the following courses:

Certificate in Technology in Distance Education and E-learning

The certificate in technology in distance education is intended to place the study of contemporary educational technologies in the context of the goals of educational and training organizations. It provides students with in-depth knowledge and experience with the primary distance technologies in use today.

Note: This certificate is for students who have a basic knowledge of foundations in distance education and e-learning. If the student does not have this knowledge, we STRONGLY recommend the student take OMDE 601 prior to starting the certificate.
