The 2016 version of the rules has changed from last year. Significant updates have been highlighted in GREEN.

The following is a list of guidelines governing the entry, construction, and competition of the student built Physmos.

SECTION 00 • Event Procedures and Safety Inspections

  1. Safety Glasses are required anytime someone is working with, on or near a Physmo! Teams should bring their own safety glasses. A limited supply will be available to checkout from the Tech Club. If you wear glasses normally, it is highly recommended you have glasses over your glasses OR bring side shields. You will not be allowed to launch without safety glasses on all team members. If you are flagged for not wearing safety glasses while in the pit or staging area you will receive a warning - second offense may result in disqualification.
  2. On Safety Inspection day, teams will place their Physmos in the staging area located on the east side of the gym opposite of the seating area beginning at 6:00 pm. The section will have a sign reading "Staging Area." Physmos should be brought in through the glass doors and then carried or wheeled to the inspection lineup.
  3. Physmos MUST pass safety inspection before 9:00 PM on safety inspection day or they will not be allowed to qualify or compete.
  4. At least three officials will be needed to perform the safety inspection on each Physmo. It is the responsibility of the officials to use their best judgment on the safety of each Physmo in conjunction with the guidelines provided.  Three officials are required so as to eliminate the possibility of a tied judgment.
  5. Officials should document the Physmo’s name on the “Safety Inspection Record” for each Physmo inspected if and ONLY if the Physmo passes the inspection. If a Physmo fails the safety inspection but can be adjusted to comply, the team has the option to make the necessary changes and be re-inspected provided they can do so BEFORE Pre Qualifying begins.
  6. Once a Physmo passes the safety inspection it will be placed in the Pre Qualifying area.
  7. If there are more than ten (10) teams total, teams in the Pre Qualifying area will have two (2) minutes to launch twenty (20) bean bags from their Physmo at a pre-built wall. If there are less than ten (10) teams total, no Pre-Qualification will be done and teams will automatically be entered into the Qualification round.
  8. The Pre Qualifying wall is constructed of thirty-three (33) 6” x 6” x 12” blocks arranged in a wall with six (6) blocks then five (5) blocks repeating. See “Pre Qualification Wall” graphic. Each block is worth five (5) points.

Pre Qualification Wall

  1. The top 20 scoring teams of the Pre Qualifying launch (if more than twenty (20) teams total) will be randomly assigned to a qualifying match.  When a qualifying match has been assigned, a Tech Club member/representative will record the Physmo’s name and the team members’ names on the Qualification Match Schedule.”
  2. When all registrants have been accounted for, the Qualification Match Schedule will be returned to the event announcer.  The Safety Inspection Record” will be given to the Primary Official recording the launch results.
  3. In the event of a tie that is above the qualification cut-off, tied teams will compete in a single shot shoot-off or an equal number of shots until one team scores with the highest scoring team qualifying.

The Objective for this year will be for two opposing teams to build a wall made from the provided wall blocks in front of their Physmo during the build phase. During the launch phase, each team will have a set amount of time to simultaneously launch as many bean bags at the opponent’s wall as possible. Each team’s block that is touching the floor at the end of the match counts towards the opponent team’s total. Knock as many of the opposing team’s blocks to the floor.

The Materials Zone is defined as the area behind each side’s launch zone where wall building materials will be located at the beginning of the build phase.
