21st century power: how to rule and look cool – a guide to what has changed and what hasn’t.

In 5 easy lessons this short stroll through the world of the powerful tries to look back to explain what rulers need to learn to get ahead in the challenging context of the 21st century.

Lesson 1: Look, it’s the 21st century, you have to relax. Jump in the jacuzzi before you go out on the town, get on twitter to your mates. Remember: if you smile the whole world smiles with you.

.

Wrong: where is mr happy?

Nah still trying too hard - not convincing enough

Yes, but a little more effort needed. Come on let that inner you really shine!

Perfect – a winner every time!

.

Lesson 2: Get the look -  use the mirror at home to perfect your own. To be truly cool you need the posture and the moves to make it work.

.

Old school flunky wobble hand gesture. H had everyone guessing what he would do next with this classic hand work. A little dated nowadays.

Good but the one finger is a little overused. remember work the crowd and funk it up a bit. Where are the accesories, not a single medal?

Much better: good use of props. When you point out who is next on the death list, let the other hand hang loose and keep it casual. Maybe a little overdone with the badges this time.

Awesome. Berlusca takes the old school look and adds a bit of too cool for school. Nice work! Eat it Muss, beating the old boys at their own game.

.

Lesson 3: Creating the right image for women means putting them at the center of your thinking at every step of the way.

.

Working the mojo with Eva. Remember to dress nice and be charming. Nice work H.

G with his Ukraininan nurse...but dressing up is only half the picture. Where’s the charm?

Good work with the personal bodyguards. Again a little too much attention to clothing, but much better with the overall presentation

Improvise! Just use every opportunity. Berlusca and Sarcozy show just how to be players on the world stage . ..Obama clearly not so impressed

.

Lesson 4: Chill with your soul mates, keep cool and get with it, get amongst your people!

.

Nice effort, keep it casual but remember to big yourself up! Good use of tassles. Maybe lose the photograph lapel G, overdoing it a bit. The sunnies are well placed though.

A little too stiff, but the right idea. Nice effort by Muss on the tassles though. Correct use of badges and lapels.

Again right idea but trying a little too hard this time. Get a smaller vehicle and try to sit down, loose the body guard and just cruise.

(Find some real people, not golf courses full of your own security guards)

The old school could teach the new some tricks on this one! Remember it is all about sharing the love!

.

Lesson 5: Get yourself a crib to entertain and do it in style.

.

Unconventional  but effective G generally brings his own special tent to occasions around the world. For the constantly mobile dictator thinking out of the box is a must.

Given the number of dictators now living overseas he could be onto something here.

This pic at the Eagles nest shows H in his little hideaway up in the Bavarian Alps. Time magazine made him man of the year in 1938 with this pic - H made it big with his use of balconies.

M used the papal seat at Palazzo Venezia, as his HQ and chill spot, bang in the center of Rome.

Having a good place to relax and shoot the breeze meant Muss always had friends coming over. In this pic the prime minister of Hungary.

.

But the Villa Certosa has everything from its own little pleasure pool to helicopter pads and easy access by boat. Berlusca knows exactly how to throw a party (he has learnt a few tricks from his mate G on the way). This pad is the place to hang out, with memorable visitors like Tony Blair and President Putin amongst the many to attend parties and happy times for all.

So all in all Berlusca cleans the table with ease proving just how to have your cake and eat it, leaving the old school behind him. His flamboyant style and winning ways set the new benchmark in the 21st century for your everyday transnational oligarch. Berlusca redefined the game making it clear that with democracy like this why bother being a dictator! Truly a 21st century star, its no wonder he has so many friends!

No offence is intended by this bit of satire - this is my own rant at the sham that is Berlusconi and the people connected with him in these photos. Italy has many business and political ties with Libya. Gadaffi in exchange for Italian oil and gas investment set up offshore processing centres there to hold and detain and torture refugees from central African countries like Sudan that would otherwise reach Italy and Europe.

.

The Italian government funded the construction of prisons for this operation and sent shipping containers full of bodybags to Gadaffi. Read about it here and here. Human rights organisations have repeatedly ignored what is known to be a brutal system where refugees simply ‘disappear’ in the desert. (this information comes from my brother Daniel Salmon who researched this in his MA thesis - his blog is here)

.

Many politicians are suddenly finding ways to disown themselves of business deals with Libya. Here and here. The UK last year (here) and more recently sold arms to Gadaffi in Tripoli, including razor wire, sniper rifles and shotguns (here)

.

Similarly the Saudis have very recently made the biggest arms deal in US history, 6o billion in guns, missiles and arms. Read about it here Is this wise in a country with its history of human rights?

.

Where is the moral high ground in foreign policy when people like Berlusconi who have clearly succeeded in corrupting democracy can still remain respectable. These people control vast amounts of power and they are criminals. African refugees suffer the horrors of torture in Libya and the European Union has done nothing about it.

.

How can the UK claim to have an ethical foreign policy when it allows its own companies to provide arms to a person like Gadaffi? Libyan civilians have been shot by soldiers with sniper rifles likely to have been made in the UK.

.

I apologise if you find any of this offensive or disturbing, but please feel free to distribute it - a bit of web based activism of a kind.
