mySociety Data Day

23rd May 2012 10.00 am - 4.00 pm

Location: etc venues, Avonmouth House, Borough, London (directions PDF)

NB Please contact Myfanwy Nixon (details below) to secure your place on the Data Day.

We hope mySociety’s Data Day will be exciting for you, offering you the chance to dig out some great stories, to play around with our data, and to have our developers at your beck and call - and of course to meet other journalists with an interest in data. Several members of mySociety will be there, including our Director Tom Steinberg, and the lead developers from FixMyStreet, WhatDoTheyKnow, TheyWorkForYou, and FixMyTransport. Press officer Myf Nixon will also be around, of course, and very happy to answer any press-related questions you might have.

We'll start the day with a brief overview from Tom, and a general discussion on what you'd like to get out of the day. Then the hacking will begin. No doubt some ideas will arise from discussions on the day, but if you can give some thought to what kind of thing you'd like to discover, that'd be great too. We've put down some ideas to start us off in a blog post, here.

Please bring a laptop and be ready to dig in. Our developers will run whatever code they're asked for, but you may find yourself scanning the results for the juicy stuff! At the end of the day, we'll have a round-up and you can share any great discoveries that you'd like to.

mySociety is the organisation behind such websites as WhatDoTheyKnow, TheyWorkForYou, FixMyStreet and FixMyTransport. Each of these sites generates a large amount of potentially newsworthy data every day.

Now we'd like to invite anyone with an interest in data journalism - or mySociety more generally - to join our team for a day's workshop in central London.

We'll collaboratively discover the stories that will make the news - you tell us the data you'd like to see, and we'll do the hacking.

Here are just a few examples of stories waiting to be mined - but with your input, we expect to discover many more.
