  1. Place science tools on the table and invite the children to explore them.
  2. Have the children share ideas about what each tool is for.
  3. Explain how each tool is use and how to use it.
  4. Place different objects in the table.
  5. Have the children use the different tools to observe the objects.
  6. Have the children answer the following questions: What tool did you use for your observation? How can science tools help you observe? What can you tell about the object you observed?

What did you learn about the objects  you looked at  and touched? 

  1. Display Flip Chart page 8.and read the title to the children.
  2. Name the objects pictured.
  3. Ask questions under Build Background at the bottom of Flip Chart page 8.
  4. Place objects on the table.
  5. The teacher will explain that they will learn about the objects by looking at them and touching them.
  6. Have the children look at the objects and name them.
  7. Have the children review the names of the objects on the Chart.
  8. Have the children name and  describe the objects on the chart by size, color and shape in complete sentences.
  9. Have the children touch the objects on the table.
  10. Ask: What else can you tell about the object? What else did you learn about ________by touching it? Why?
  11. Repeat children’s answer in complete sentences.
  12. Write descriptive words on the board.
  13. Have the children compare and contrast the different objects.
  14. Ask: How are the cotton balls and the rock alike? How are they different?

 The children will guess what is inside a box using the sense of touch.

What sense do you use to guess what is inside  the box? 

  1. The teacher will select two of each of the  8 different objects of varying sizes, shapes and masses.  
  2. place a set of each objects on the table.
  3. Ask students to match the objects on the table to the ones on the boxes.
  4. Have the children describe the object that they are touching.
  5. Have the children answer the following questions: What sense was use in this activity? How were you able to match the objects to the correct box without seeing inside the box? Would you have guess what was inside the box without your hands?
