The education situation in Somalia, like much of Sub-Saharan Africa, is in a less than idea state.  Unfortunately for me, there seemed to be a lot of Somali data missing in the records, but I made do.

Child stunting is holding back 40% of children under 5  in education (200-2007.)

**

2006-2007

Total aid to basic education was 12 million US dollars.

**

Female Literacy - 25.8%

Male literacy - 49.7%

Total literacy - 37.8%

Primary School girls out of school - 94%

Somali data wasn’t available for many of the relationships.  I found some for South Africa too.

LIFE OF A 12 YEAR OLD GIRL

This is Halima

Early in the morning she wakes up to start the day.

She cooks roti for herself and family.  Halima must help take care of her brothers and sisters, because they are younger.

In the past, she had more siblings, but some died at an early age from infection.

She used to go to the school for a bit when she was younger, but doesn’t anymore.  Life is rough and often dangerous with the presence of guns and violence amiss.  As a young girl, Halima is in no position to do anything.

During the day, she works to farm enough agriculture to make money with her mom.  Her other sisters make crafts to be sold at their father’s small business.  Her brothers go to the school at 10.

It is almost time for her to get married.
