The 4th Hawkeye 50K & 25K. A Race To Benefit The Fight Against Lupus.

March 15, 2014 11:00am. (Note new start time!) Capped at 150 runners. 8 hour time limit. Average high on March 15: 46 degrees. Average low: 27. Record high: 76. Record low: 6. March is a fairly a low-rainfall month in this area, but rain and snow are possible. Race begins at Lake Macbride Nature Recreation Area, about 12 miles north of Iowa City, near the city of Solon.

The course is a 25K (15.5 mi) loop around Lake Macbride. 50K runners would do two loops. Surface: ~1/3 park & county roads, ~1/3 crushed gravel, ~1/3 dirt and grass trails. One little climb up some rocks (may need your hands). One water crossing in rushing cold water, about 30 yards wide. Water could be knee high, or it may be bone dry. The good news is you pass by the start about 1.7 miles after this if you want to change shoes. The trails are slightly technical at times but mostly pretty easy. Course record 3:34:21 for men and 4:21:41 for women. Aid stations every five miles with sport drink, typical ultra foods, and portapotties.

For 2013 the entry fees were $35 for the 50K and $25 for the 25K . Shirts were optional for $10, with women’s shirts available. Fees for 2014 have not been set yet.

Medals are awarded to all finishers. There will be three divisions in both the 50K and 25K: Juniors up through age 29. Seniors ages 30 through 49. Masters ages 50 and above. Small prizes will be awarded to overall champions, and division winners 1st through 3rd.
