Book Moodle ISU


Introduction

The book allows you to give information to your students in a multi-page, book-like format. The book allows you to have main chapters and subchapters. However, subchapters cannot have their own subchapters as the book is intended to be a simple resource for teachers and students.

This guide will help you to:

Create a Book

  1. Turn editing on. For more information, see Moodle ISU Overview
  2. In the topic where you wish to add the book, Click Add an activity or resource

  1. Select Book
  2. Click Add

General

  1. In the Name field, Type the name of the book. This will display to the students on the course homepage.
  2. In the Description field, Type a description of the book or any other information you would like students to see.

Note: If you wish to have the description displayed to students on the homepage, Check Display description on course page.

Appearance

  1. Chapter formatting - lets you decide how you would like your chapters to be formatted.
  1. None -  Chapter and subchapter titles are not formatted at all.
  2. Numbers -  Chapters and subchapters are numbered (1, 1.1, 1.2, 2,…)
  3. Bullets -  Subchapters are indented and displayed with bullets.
  4. Indented -  Subchapters are indented.
  1. Style of navigation - lets you decide how the titles are displayed.
  1. TOC Only - The table of contents is used for navigation.
  2. Images - Icons are used for navigation
  3. Text - Chapter titles are used.
  1. Custom titles - check this box if you want to display chapter titles automatically.

Common module settings

  1. Choose whether to Show on course page, Hide from student, or Make available but not shown on course page the Page (default is Show)
  2. Enter an ID number only if you want a way of identifying the activity for grade calculation purposes. If the activity is not included in any grade calculation then the ID number field may be left blank.

To save:

  1. Click Save and return to course to be taken back to the course homepage.
  2. Click Save and display to start editing your book.
  3. Click Cancel to delete the book.

Modify a Book

  1. Turn editing on. For more information, see Moodle ISU Overview
  2. Click on the book you wish to edit
  1. Locate the TABLE OF CONTENTS block at the top left side of the page

  1. Arrow icon: The arrow icon allows you to move chapters up and down in order
  2. Gear icon:The gear icon lets you edit a chapter’s content and titles, as well as make it a subchapter
  3. Trash icon:Click the Trash icon to delete a chapter
  4. Eye icon:Click the eye icon to hide a chapter from the students.  The chapter will be lighter to teachers indicating the chapter is hidden
  5. + icon:Click the + icon to add a new chapter or subchapter

To add a chapter or subchapter:

Note:  You can add numerous chapters/subchapters.

  1. Click on the + icon

  1. Type the chapter title into the Chapter title text box
  2. Check Subchapter if you want to make this page a subchapter
  1. Type the content into the Content text box

  1. Click Save changes when finished.

Note: You can navigate from chapter to chapter with the arrow icons on the upper and bottom right and left side of the book.
