Bias Ridged Hat

By rdtebby

Materials: about 200 yds of worsted weight wool, with long colour changes

(eg 2 balls Noro Kureyon, or 2 balls Plymouth Yarn Boku)

1 pair 5 mm needles

1 set 4.5mm or 5 mm dpns

Gauge: 4 sts per inch

Size: to fit average adult head

Using 5mm needles, cast on 50 stitches, loosely.

Row 1 (RS): K1, K into front and back of next st, K to 3 sts from end, K2 tog, K1

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: K1, K into front and back of next st, K to 3 sts from end, K2 tog, K1

Row 4: Knit

Row 5: P1, K into front and back of next st, P to 3 sts from end, P2 tog, P1

Row 6: Knit

Repeat pattern 22 times, or until side edge fits comfortably around the head, ending with pattern Row 6.

Join side edges, to make a tube. (3 ways; pick your fav)

  1. Cast off on 6th row, then sew this edge to the cast on edge
  2. Don’t cast off. Pick up 50 sts from cast on edge onto another needle, and do a 3 needle bind-off
  3. Don’t cast off. Pick up 50 sts from cast on edge onto another needle, then graft the edges together (this is the one I used)

Finishing

Using the dpn needles pick up and knit 3 stitches for each ‘hill and valley' pair around one end of the tube. (approx 66 sts)

K one row

Next row: (K1,K2 together) Repeat to end of round.

Repeat these 2 rows until you’re down to a small number of stitches (10 or under), knitting 2 tog around on last round, if necessary.

Cut end, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and sew in ends.
